Paternity Leave
The American University in Cairo (AUC) is committed to providing work and family life balance and preserving family integrity to allow a father employee to take time off to care for their partner who gives birth and to bond with his newborn child.
A father employee is entitled to paternity leave of three consecutive working days with full pay starting from the date of his child’s birth for each delivery, regardless of the number of newborns delivered, during the father’s employment with the university. At the father’s request and with the approval of the father’s supervisor and the Office of Human Resources (for staff) or the Faculty Affairs Office (for faculty), paternity leave may be commenced at a different date so long as it is used within six months after the child’s birth date. Paternity leave must be used as one consecutive period of three working days.
To request paternity leave for the birth of his child, the father employee must:
- Notify his direct supervisor and the Office of Human Resources (for staff), and the Faculty Affairs Office (for faculty) of the expected delivery date at least a month in advance.
- Request that his paternity leave commences immediately upon the child’s birth; the father must provide the requested dates for leave with the notice of the expected delivery date.
- Inform his direct supervisor and the Office of Human Resources or the Faculty Affairs Office, as appropriate, of any changes in the expected delivery date.
- Submit the newborn’s birth certificate to the Office of Human Resources within one month of the delivery of his child.
