What is a teaching assistant?
A teaching assistant is someone who is at a graduate level (holding a bachelor or a master's degree) and assigned to an undergraduate course offered at AUC in order to assist with course delivery.
Who can be a teaching assistant at AUC?
To be considered for a teaching assistantship at AUC, you must either hold a bachelor or a master's degree, with very good English language skills, and a good sound background in the course(s) material to which you would be assigned. Undergraduate students and Ph.D holders cannot become teaching assistants in AUC.
In awarding teaching assistantships at AUC, priority is given to the students enrolled in one of the graduate programs at AUC.
Individuals with any type of employment contractual agreement with AUC cannot be awarded teaching assistantships.
What are the duties of a teaching assistant at AUC?
The duties of a teaching assistant are specified in a document adopted by the University Senate in 2015. Typically, the instructor of the course(s) you are assigned to would specify how he/she would like you to assist with the course delivery within the following duties:

How to become a teaching assistant at AUC?
Whether you are a graduate student enrolled in one of the graduate programs at AUC or not, you need to send an updated CV to the academic department or unit you would like to be involved with.
In the case of need, the department will contact you for an interview.
You will be informed in case you are selected for a teaching assistantship. This typically takes place just before the start of the semester.
For the first-time award of a teaching assistantship, you need to attend a teaching assistantship training, held during the first two weeks of the semester.
Teaching assistantships are competitive, and an interview does not guarantee an award.
What is the teaching assistantship award?
The teaching assistantship award is the assignment to courses in a particular semester.
This award entails a stipend paid to the teaching assistant. This award does not entail any tuition waivers.
The teaching assistantship award is not a term of employment, and the stipend is not a salary.
How long is the teaching assistantship award for?
The teaching assistantship award is for the duration of one semester.
Obtaining an award for subsequent semesters is not guaranteed.
Can the teaching assistantship award entail assignments in different courses and/or with different course instructors?
Yes, it can entail different courses and/or different course instructors.
Can the teaching assistantship award entail assignments in different departments?
Yes, it can entail courses in different departments. In such a case, you need to have contacted different departments, with each offering you an assignment.
What is the expected time input for a teaching assistantship award?
The teaching assistantship award can entail a time input between 1 and 30 hours per week. The time input is determined by the assignment a teaching assistant has. It is based on the credit hours of the courses the teaching assistant is assigned to, as well as the number of students he/she supports, and the nature of the course (lecture-based, laboratory, studio).
The maximum time input possible for a teaching assistantship award at AUC is 30 hours/week.
What is a stipend?
The stipend is the remuneration associated with the teaching assistantship award for the time input entailed.
The hourly rate for the master's degree holders is EGP 70, and the hourly rate for the bachelor degree holders is EGP 65.
The teaching assistantship award is not a term of employment and the stipend is not a salary.
How and when does the teaching assistant get his/her stipend?
To receive the stipend, the TA must have a valid bank account in Egypt. TA is requested to submit a bank certificate with his/her bank details of his/her bank account to the department he/she is assigned with. This information will be used by the AUC payroll office to get the stipend paid.
The total amount of the stipend for the semester is paid as follows:
1. Fall Semester = Three payments; the first and second payments represent each 25 percent of the total stipend. The third payment represents the remaining 50 percent.
2. Spring Semester = Three payments; the first and second payments represent each 25 percent of the total stipend. The third payment represents the remaining 50 percent.
Winter Session (where applicable) = One payment
Summer Session = Two payments, one for the first month, and a second for the remainder of the stipend
The payments are typically made on the fifteenth of the month (or in a case of a holiday, the next available working day).
This is conditional that all documents needed for the teaching assistantship award have been duly submitted, and the award forms duly processed by the academic department where the teaching assistantship assignment is.
What degree should a teaching assistant have?
To be awarded a teaching assistantship, a bachelor or a master's degree is required. Ph.D holders cannot become teaching assistants at AUC.
What is the teaching assistants training?
It is a training day that all new teaching assistants at AUC must attend. The day is composed of several sessions introducing concepts, practices, and pedagogies useful for teaching. The training day aims at building the capacities of new teaching assistants at AUC.
This training is mandatory for all new teaching assistants. Attending all training sessions during the day is a must for obtaining the teaching assistantship award.
This training is also open to interested in continuing teaching assistants.
What are the documents needed for finalizing the award of a teaching assistantship?
For finalizing the award of a teaching assistantship, the following documents are needed:
- The certificate of your highest degree (bachelor or master's degree)
- Your CV
- A copy of your National ID for Egyptians or passport for Non-Egyptians
- A copy of your AUC teaching assistantship ID
- Bank certificate that has the details of the TA’s bank account in a local bank in Egypt
The documents are to be submitted to the department(s) where your assignment(s) is/are.
How to issue an AUC teaching assistantship ID?
At the beginning of the semester, the department will register the TA onto the TA online system. The TA will have a banner record created and will receive an automated email inviting him/her to issue their TA ID at the ID center. Fellows assigned as TAs in exchange for their fellowship need not issue a separate TA ID.
What benefits are associated with an AUC teaching assistantship ID?
The teaching assistantship ID at AUC allows you access to campus during the semester in which you hold a teaching assistantship award.
It also gives you borrowing rights from the AUC Library, as well as the right to use the AUC transportation buses with no charge.
Is it possible to hold a teaching assistantship award and a graduate fellowship concurrently?
Holding a teaching assistantship award and a graduate fellowship concurrently is possible. However, the total number of input hours per week for both cannot exceed 30 hours.
