- Housing Procedures
The American University in Cairo (AUC) Housing Office provides support and clear procedures to ensure a smooth transition for faculty and staff throughout their residency, whether you are arriving, relocating within University housing or preparing to depart.
The Housing Office offers a professional moving service to assist residents with their transitions between different locations within the AUC premises.
- For faculty members hired starting the academic year 2011 - 2012, the new monthly rent will be applied on the month of the move if the move takes place during the first half of the month (1-15). If the move takes place during the second half of the month, the new monthly rent will be applied to the month following the move
- The moving coordinator, Nader Fangari, will contact the moving tenant to set the date of the move.
- If it is necessary to change the set date, the Housing Office or the moving tenant should notify the other party in advance by email at housing@aucegypt.edu
- Upon request, the Housing Office will supply tape and about 25 packing boxes, which must be returned later
- The moving tenant must pack his or her personal effects, in addition to the movable items listed here, unless he or she is moving from/to New Cairo faculty housing, as the apartments contain these items. Tenant moving from New Cairo apartments to New Cairo housing must pack the items listed above
- All tenants moving to New Cairo faculty housing will be charged rent according to the number of bedrooms in the apartment. Check the annual rental fees here. The rent excludes utilities, which will be charged upon actual consumption
- The moving of the tenant’s owned items of high value or which require specialized handling will be the tenant's responsibility and at their expense
- The Housing Office does not provide packers nor pays for them
- Tenants may not relocate AUC furniture from one apartment to another without prior approval from the Housing Office. If approved, the inventory list of both locations will be updated accordingly
- If the moving tenant is not subscribed to ADSL through the Housing Office, he or she must cancel the ADSL service, settle all bills and hand over the splitter and router or modem to the ADSL provider (if rented) before moving. The Housing Office must be notified of the cancellation number by email at housing@aucegypt.edu
On the day of the move:
- The moving captain must receive the old apartment's main door keys from the moving tenant
- The moving captain will inspect the old and new AUC apartments and check the inventory of assets in both apartments with the moving tenant, who signs on both inventories
Note: Items like the telephone sets, curtains, table lamps, transformer , and emergency lights must not be moved to the new apartment.
AUC tenants will advise the Housing Office, at the earliest possible, of any intention to vacate University housing, with no less than one month's written notice of the date on which they will vacate the premises.
Before the departure of AUC housing tenants, the following procedures are to be taken:
- The AUC housing tenant should settle any outstanding payments for ADSL, mobile and international calls
- In the last month of tenancy, the amount of the rent will be prorated
- Upon vacating the apartment, the tenant's name will be moved automatically from any resident housing waiting list to the non-resident waiting list (priority is given to the residents)
- If an AUC housing tenant decides to sell any of his/her used items to anyone and will leave this item to be picked up after his/her departure from the apartment, the Housing Office should be notified via email stating in the email the item, name of the purchaser and his/her contacts. In addition, the name of the purchaser should be written on the item. The Housing Office will not be responsible for any items left in the apartment without any notification
- If a departing faculty member has not subscribed to the ADSL through the Housing Office, he/she must cancel the ADSL service, settle all bills and hand over the splitter and router or modem to the ADSL provider (if rented) before departing. The Housing Office must be notified of the cancellation number through email to housing@aucegypt.edu
- The AUC housing tenant will contact the Housing Office to set an appointment to inspect the apartment and the check-out inventory list of assets and materials
- After inspection and check-out inventory, the Housing Office representative will receive a copy of the main door key. In the case of AUC New Cairo housing apartments, tenants who already have activated AUC ID access to the apartments are kindly requested to visit the Security Office to deactivate the apartment access on the date of inspection
- AUC tenants will be responsible for all costs and charges as determined by the AUC estimated cost. AUC will bill the AUC housing tenant or may deduct such amounts from compensation due to the AUC tenants in the following cases:
- Damages or losses in inventory items
- Damage that requires excessive/substantial cleaning as revealed in the check-out inspection
- Damage to University housing resulting from a violation of any AUC rules
- The Housing office representative will sign the clearance of the departing AUC tenant after settling all the due amounts
- All main door keys should be left in the apartment when the AUC housing tenant departs. In the case of AUC New Cairo housing, all key cards should be left in the apartment on the date of departure
