Statement from AUC's Board of Trustees
February 11, 2019
On February 11, 2019, at its Cairo meeting, the Board of Trustees of the American University in Cairo voted unanimously to adopt the following statement:
On this 100th anniversary of the American University in Cairo, the Board of Trustees expresses its deep pride in the University as a beacon of knowledge in Egypt and a center of intellectual, social and cultural life in the Arab world. We express our utmost gratitude to the administration, faculty, staff, students, alumni and the broader University community for fulfilling the University’s mission each and every day. The Board expresses its appreciation to the students, faculty, administration and University community for sharing their perspectives with us.
The Board is AUC’s ultimate governing and decision-making body, entrusted with fiduciary responsibility for the University. We the Trustees embrace this fundamental duty. The Board unanimously reaffirms its continued confidence and unqualified support for President Francis J. Ricciardone and the administration. The Board commends President Ricciardone’s leadership and decision-making, which we deem essential to AUC’s present and future success.
As a hallmark of excellence, AUC earned the enthusiastic re-affirmation of its accreditation by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. One of the seven standards of accreditation looks at governance, in particular a common understanding of how the University is governed. Building on the cooperative spirit that produced the successful re-affirmation, the Board expects the University administration, with the advice of the University Senate and the faculty at large, to clarify any ambiguities regarding governance. The Board recognizes the work thus far by the group of faculty members working with the Provost on the Faculty Handbook. The Board directs the President to complete his consultations and submit a final draft by April 15 in order to give the Board time for considered review before its May 16 meeting.
