Dear AUC Community,

With great sadness, I am sharing the news of the passing of Dr. Salah Arafa, who retired in 2023 from the Department of Physics and was an active member of the AUC faculty for 45 years. During his tenure at AUC, he twice served as department chair and served as a Senator at large in the University Senate.

Arafa is recognized as one of the leading social entrepreneurs in Egypt and throughout the region. He was selected as a Senior Ashoka Fellow in 2004 and was awarded the Man of the Year for Environment and Development in 2009. He was also heavily involved in many civil society activities and was the chairman and founder of numerous NGOs in Egypt. He served as a consultant to many international organizations, including UNICEF, GTZ, EU, UNDP and USAID. He was a member of the National Committee on Climate Change and also a member of the Research Council on Environment and Development at the Egyptian Academy for Scientific Research and Technology. 

Arafa's work in the fields of Experimental Physics, Advanced Materials, Renewable Energies, Climate Change Impacts, Sustainable Community Development, Child Protection and Eco-communities is recognized nationally and globally.

Condolences for Dr. Salah Arafa will be held on Sunday, August 3, at the Police Mosque in New Cairo. Women will gather in Al Hoda Hall, and men in Al Doha Hall.
