AUC honors the legacy of Advisory Trustee Arthur Lindenauer, a distinguished corporate leader, philanthropist and longtime supporter of the University.

Arthur Lindenauer, who was a devoted member of AUC’s Board of Trustees for more than a decade before continuing his service as advisory trustee, passed away on October 11 at his home in New York.

“Art was a dedicated member of the Board of Trustees for 12 years, and after retiring from the Board, he continued his involvement as an Advisory Trustee and faithful member of the Audit Committee right up until his passing,” said Mark Turnage (ALU ’82), chair of AUC’s Board of Trustees and CEO of DarkOwl. “His dedication to AUC was noted and appreciated by many of us, and he provided a role model for continued involvement with the University.”

A distinguished corporate leader and philanthropist, Lindenauer served as executive vice president and chief financial officer of Schlumberger for more than two decades, following his time as a partner at Price Waterhouse from 1972 to 1980. He earned a BA from Dartmouth College and an MBA from the Tuck School of Business.

Throughout his involvement with AUC, Lindenauer supported numerous philanthropic initiatives and contributed to student scholarships and fellowships, including the AUC Centennial Endowed Scholarship Fund, the Iman Elshahidi Study Abroad Endowed Scholarship and the Center for Arabic Study Abroad (CASA@AUC) Endowed Fellowship. His support also extended to the AUC Fund, University initiatives such as the London Fundraising Gala Dinner and student scholarships at the New York Benefit Dinner. He supported campus development through the Art and Susan Lindenauer Room, a 45-seat classroom on the plaza level of the School of Sciences and Engineering at AUC’s New Cairo campus.

“Art was a legend,” said AUC Trustee and Board Chair Emeritus Richard Bartlett, who is managing director of the U.S.-based Resource Holdings. “He was the longstanding chair of our Audit Committee and brought his incomparable expertise in finance and accounting to the role. When he reached the age when trustees ordinarily relinquish their committee roles and move to advisory status, our Board happily made an exception for Art, who graciously agreed to continue to serve on the Audit Committee. The University was better for it, and all of us trustees rested a little easier.”

Beyond his corporate roles, Lindenauer’s commitment to education also extended to his alma mater, Dartmouth College, serving on its Board of Overseers and as a trustee of the Tuck School of Business, where he also lectured on corporate governance and negotiation strategy. Together with his wife, Susan Lindenauer, he supported the establishment of the Lindenauer Forum for Governance Research at Tuck, an academic center dedicated to advancing corporate governance research and education while fostering dialogue among academics, students and business practitioners.

His other professional affiliations included serving on the board of Transocean International Limited, an offshore drilling contractor, where he also chaired the Audit Committee. He held leadership roles in nonprofit organizations, serving as a board member of VNS Health, one of the largest not-for-profit home and community healthcare organizations in the United States, and a trustee of the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, a Grammy Award-winning chamber orchestra based in New York City. In addition, he served as director of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to advancing research, treatment and care for cystic fibrosis, a genetic disease that primarily affects the lungs and digestive system.

“Art distinguished himself as Chair of the AUC Audit Committee and was gracious enough to continue his service to the AUC community for many years after moving to Advisory Trustee status,” said AUC Trustee Teresa Barger, CEO of Cartica Management in the United States. “Art’s experience with AUC audit greatly predates that of any member now serving. We have benefited enormously from his generosity in remaining active on the committee for these many years. His wisdom, insights and expertise have guided us on many occasions. His stalwart support for AUC will be long remembered with gratitude.”
