About the International Center for Academic Integrity (ICAI)
The International Center for Academic Integrity (ICAI) was founded in 1992 by Don McCabe of Rutgers University to address cheating, plagiarism and academic dishonesty in higher education. Over time, its mission has expanded to fostering cultures of integrity across academic communities worldwide. ICAI is guided by six fundamental values: Honesty, trust, fairness, respect, responsibility and courage, which define academic integrity as a commitment upheld even in challenging circumstances. These values shape the principles and behaviors that institutions, educators and students are encouraged to put into practice on campuses and in daily life.
In 2016, ICAI launched its first International Day of Action Against Contract Cheating, now recognized as the International Day of Action for Academic Integrity. The event is held annually on the third Wednesday of October. Each year, a dedicated committee, along with faculty, staff and student working groups, develops resources and organizes global activities, including panel discussions, debates and interactive sessions that promote engagement with academic integrity. A student contest is also held each year, featuring a new theme and prizes for the winners.
