Advising Support Services
LEAP Advising
The program aims to support at-risk and on-probation students to help them get back on their academic track. Two types of students will be monitored and advised by this program. These are:
- At-risk students: Students who are facing some critical academic difficulties that are hindering them from achieving educational success and declaring their intended majors
- Students on academic probation: Students with an alarming academic status have academic GPAs of less than 2.0. These students need to raise their GPAs and level them up to meet the standards and requirements to declare their intended majors
Objectives
Academic advising is central to supporting students in achieving their academic goals. To fulfil this purpose, the program aims to focus on these students and align stakeholders to help them achieve better educational outcomes. Hence, the advising center will work on the following:
- Assessing students’ situations and understanding factors affecting their academic performance
- Implementing an individualized intervention plan to support them in getting back on track
- Work with stakeholders on campus to support students
- Monitor students’ performance and evaluate their academic performance after the intervention
- Modify the academic plan accordingly
Supporting Students with Accessibility Needs
The center also supports students identified and referred by SAS by coordinating with the Office of Student Well-being to determine a suitable academic track. Additionally, we collaborate with departments to facilitate registration with professors who are aware of their needs. Furthermore, this group of students qualifies for early registration, which advisors manage in coordination with the Office of Student Well-being.
Supporting Students on Scholarships
A dedicated advising unit to advise students on scholarships. As this group has unique needs in terms of course requirements, for example, major requirements and load they must take per semester/session, in addition to timely graduation. This requires extensive communication and comprehension of our scholarship advisors with the major scholarship offices on campus, and continuous monitoring of their progress.
Advising of Double/Change of Major Students
A recent study highlighted a challenge faced by students wishing to change their major or pursue a double major. These students often struggle to find accurate advising, as their original department may not be familiar with the requirements of their intended major, while the new department may not officially oversee their advising.
To bridge this gap, the Advising Center provides dedicated support for students navigating major changes or double majors. Our advisors have a comprehensive understanding of all undergraduate major requirements, ensuring that students receive accurate guidance to make informed academic decisions.
