AUC Marketing Communication AI Guidelines
Objective
The objective of these guidelines is to establish a responsible, practical and consistent framework for the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in AUC’s marketing, communications and public affairs activities, ensuring that its use aligns with the University’s values and standards of authenticity, accuracy, transparency and accountability. The guidelines cover a range of areas, including branding, photography and images, video and audio, written content, illustrations, disclosure and transparency, authenticity and representation, people and likeness, consent, and accountability.
As AI technologies evolve and our experience applying these guidelines grows, the guidelines will be reviewed and updated as needed to reflect emerging technologies, practical applications and evolving institutional needs.
Human Review Is Required and Essential
Each AUC office, department, school and center is responsible for ensuring that AI tools are used responsibly and accurately and that all AI-assisted or AI-generated content is reviewed by a human for accuracy and compliance with AUC policies, branding standards and editorial guidelines before publication or distribution.
Authenticity of AUC Visual Communications
All visual communications representing or depicting AUC, its campus, or its community must reflect authentic people, places and experiences. Images, photographs, illustrations and audiovisual content featuring or showing AUC students, faculty, staff, alumni, University buildings, campus spaces or University activities must not be AI-generated, either wholly or partially, or AI-enhanced in ways that alter or artificially create visual content. This applies to all communications and promotional materials, including posters, flyers, banners, social media posts, website content, icons, reels, videos and other digital or print materials and individual profile images.
AUC’s brand is rooted in authenticity and genuine representation of our community, campus, buildings and spaces. The use of AI-generated or artificially altered content that misrepresents AUC’s people, places or experiences risks undermining the authenticity and credibility of the University’s brand and the trust it builds with its audiences.
AUC Branding
- AUC Logos: AI tools almost always distort or alter logos and trademarks. This, of course, is a violation of AUC branding. Do not upload AUC’s logo to any AI tools; instead, add it after the AI-generated content is complete. The person creating the promotional material/asset needs to carefully review and fix the logo to ensure that there is no change to the AUC logo. This applies to all AUC logos, including institutional, schools, offices, etc.
- Fonts and Colors: The AUC brand is defined by its consistent use of fonts, colors and image style. To ensure compliance with AUC branding for fonts and colors, the person creating the promotional material/asset needs to carefully review and fix any font or color alterations or issues that do not align with AUC branding.
Defining AI Enhancements
- Unacceptable AI Image Alterations: Generally unacceptable examples of image altering include adding people, removing people, changing the number of people, changing a building, changing the campus environment, changing an event, changing someone's appearance, including clothing, hair, makeup and expression, changing what someone is holding, altering the apparent time or location of an event.
- Acceptable AI Image Enhancements: Routine technical enhancements that do not alter the authenticity, substance or context of an image or audiovisual content are permitted. These include resizing, cropping, noise reduction, exposure and color correction, sharpening, and resolution optimization. However, AI-based alterations that add, remove, replace or modify people, objects, backgrounds or other visual elements, or that change the way a person, place or event is represented, are not permitted. The distinction is between improving the technical quality of existing content and using AI to alter or create what the content depicts.
Generally acceptable without AI disclosure: cropping, resizing, color correction, exposure, contrast, sharpening noise reduction, minor skin retouching, removing temporary objects, and improving image resolution.
