Best Practices for Using Generative AI Tools Responsibly
To ensure its ethical, effective, and responsible use, follow the guidelines below:
1. Understand the Limitations
AI models can sometimes generate incorrect, biased, or incomplete information (“hallucinations”). Always critically evaluate the output.
2. Verify Information
Treat AI-generated content as a starting point. Factcheck any claims, data, or critical information using reliable sources before using or sharing it.
3. Protect Confidential Data
While our enterprise agreements offer enhanced data protection compared to free consumer versions, avoid inputting highly sensitive, confidential, or personally identifiable information (PII) related to yourself or others into these tools unless explicitly cleared by AUC data policies for specific use cases. Your interactions within the enterprise versions are generally not used to train public models, but caution is always advised.
4. Uphold Academic and Professional Integrity
- Do not represent AI-generated work as your own original thought.
- Use these tools as assistants for brainstorming, drafting, summarizing, or learning, not for completing assignments or tasks entirely without your own significant intellectual contribution.
- Cite Appropriately: If you use AI to generate ideas, text, or code that significantly influences your work, consult your instructor or AUC’s academic integrity guidelines on proper citation and acknowledgment. Policies may evolve, so stay informed.
5. Be Mindful of Bias
AI models are trained on vast datasets, which may contain societal biases. Be aware that outputs might reflect these biases and critically assess generated content for fairness and inclusivity.
6. Think Partnership, Not Replacement
Use AI to augment your skills and knowledge, not replace critical thinking, creativity, or interpersonal communication.
7. Adhere to AUC Policies
Your use of these tools is subject to all existing AUC policies, including the Code of Academic Ethics, Acceptable Use Policy for IT Resources, and any applicable data privacy regulations.
