Guidelines and Academic Integrity

Find out what AUC's guidelines are for AI use for both faculty and students, and get support on how to address AI on your syllabus. You will also find the procedure AUC recommends for responding to suspected AI use beyond what you have permitted in your course.

AUC’s guidelines give faculty members freedom to choose their own AI guidelines for their individual courses, recognizing diversity between disciplines and course levels. 

Faculty members are asked to clearly communicate AI guidelines upfront in their syllabi and assignment guidelines, address suspected misuse directly with students (See guidelines on how to report inappropriate use of AI). 

CLT strongly discourages the use of AI detectors as they are unreliable and may result in false positives or false negatives.

Faculty members are encouraged to rethink their assessments to promote academic integrity in the age of AI (see “How can I ensure students are learning in the age of AI?” and “How can I redesign my assignments and exams to make them "AI-resistant”?”)

If you have clarified to students the degree to which AI use is permitted, and you suspect some have used AI inappropriately, please use these guidelines on how to report suspected inappropriate use of AI

If you suspect inappropriate AI use by students, please see guidelines on how to report inappropriate use of AI. Although these guidelines do leave room for AI detector use, it can never be the only source of evidence, and students must be informed and give consent to their work being uploaded into any AI tool, whether AI detector or otherwise.

AUC advises faculty members to clarify their stance about AI use in the syllabus and/or on each assignment, whether the stance is more permissive or more restrictive, or anywhere in between. 

AUC provides sample syllabus statements you can adapt for your own needs.

All AUC students take a self-paced online course on critical AI literacy during their first year.

The overall guidelines for students are available here and focus mainly on students not assuming that AI use is permitted without checking with teachers, and encouraging transparency and offering ways to cite AI use. The guidelines also advise students, when permitted to use AI, to never accept AI output as is without verifying against more credible sources, and reminds them they are fully responsible for any work they produce and submit.
