Brief Biography

Rania Jabr is a senior English language instructor II at The American University in Cairo, where she has shaped English language education since 1990. A native of Jordan, she holds a master's in TEFL and an RSA Certificate in teaching English for native speakers. As a CELTA-certified educator, her exceptional pedagogical accomplishments have earned her prestigious accolades, including the AUC Board of Trustees Award in 1995 and the Excellence in Teaching Award in 2013. Reflecting her deep commitment to service, she has served multiple terms in the AUC University Senate, spanning 2006 to 2008, 2017 to 2020 and 2026 onwards. At the forefront of modern classroom innovation, Jabr specializes in AI integration, digital literacy and active learner autonomy. She recently secured second place in the high-profile AI Spotlight Competition at AUC’s Research and Creativity Convention 2026.

As a distinguished leader in the global English Language Teaching community, Jabr is a founding member of TESOL Arabia, playing a foundational role in establishing TESOL Arabia Conferences and expanding its regional influence. Her international leadership includes judging the British Council's ELTons International Awards and serving as chair or co-chair for the milestone NileTESOL-AUC Conferences in 2012, 2018 and 2022. On the global stage, she serves on the Membership Committee IATEFL and reads proposals for a number of international conferences, including for the TESOL International Association, several of its official global affiliates, ALLT, IATEFL, TESOL Arabia, among several others. Her dedication to the field is further highlighted by her volunteer work as a reader for the BBC and the British Council Teaching English website. Jabr is also an expert curriculum designer, teacher educator and editorial board member for numerous EFL journals. She significantly contributed to restructuring and reviewing the curriculum for the Intensive English Program at the English Language Institute at The American University in Cairo and created the new curriculum for the Department of English Language at the School of Continuing Education at The American University in Cairo.

Her expertise has earned media recognition, featuring interviews with The Guardian's "Learning English" section in 2011 and Oxford University Press in 2017. As a highly prolific scholar, she has authored over 30 peer-reviewed articles and Cambridge Scholars book chapters, focusing on advanced course design, innovative educational technology, skill integration, materials development, assessment, AI application and student autonomy. Her research frequently appears in key industry venues, such as English Teaching Professional, TESOL Arabia Perspectives, Studies in Self-Access Learning Journal, IATEFL Voices and various Teacher Development and Independence SIG newsletters.

Her published scholarship includes most recently an article on responsible AI adoption in the New Chalk Talk newsletter, alongside specialized chapters published through Zayed University Press, including "Encouraging Learners To Think about Their Own Thinking" (focusing on metacognition) and "Lifelong Learning via Digital Literacy Tools and Skills" (exploring digital language proficiency). Jabr presents annually both in person and virtually at local, international and AUC-sponsored conferences held in Egypt and actively serves as a presenter for global online webinars. Furthermore, she mentors new teaching fellows within her department, training them to teach a number of language skill areas.
