Mona El Saady is chair and senior instructor II in the Department of English Language Instruction, within the Academy of Liberal Arts at The American University in Cairo. She became chair of the department in July 2026, with responsibility for faculty support, curriculum, assessment and departmental operations. She received her bachelor's degree in economics, with a minor in computer science, and her master's degree in teaching English as a foreign language, both from The American University in Cairo, and has taught at AUC for more than 30 years.
El Saady teaches academic English to undergraduate and pre-freshman students in ENGL 0210, ENGL 0211, SEMR 1023, RHET 1010, CORE 1010 and RHET 1020. She earlier served as director of the ENGL 0210 program from 2016 to 2022 and coordinated SEMR 1023 in Spring 2024. She helped design ENGL 0211, and in 2025 co-chaired the organizing committee of ILACE, an international conference on language assessment held at AUC. She has chaired the ENGL 0210 Assessment and Borderline committees, has served on numerous departmental and school committees, including the Program Review and Planning Committee, and currently represents her department in the University Senate as an at-large senator for the Academy of Liberal Arts (2025–2027), having earlier served as ELI senator (2011–2013 and 2003–2005). She also serves on the Senate Administrative Affairs Committee.
El Saady's interests include needs assessment, curriculum design, materials development, learner motivation, teaching methodology, language assessment, teacher training and the use of technology in the classroom, including current work on critical thinking and assessment in the age of artificial intelligence and on bridging cultures in the ESL classroom. She regularly trains new faculty and mentors master's TESOL fellows and TESL students, and has presented at local and international conferences, among them the Sommergarten 2026 Inaugural International Symposium on Culture in Language Education, known as LCIE, and recent IATEFL conferences in Brighton (2026), Edinburgh (2025), Liverpool (2019) and Brighton (2018).
