Brief Biography

The American University in Cairo named Professor Joseph Massad a distinguished visiting professor. He received his Doctor of Philosophy from Columbia University in 1998. His books have been translated into several languages, including Arabic, Chinese, Turkish and French

Research Interest

He has a particular interest in theories of identity and culture, which include:

  • Nationalism
  • Sexuality
  • Race and religion
  • History of settler-colonialism
  • Islam in Liberalism (2015)
  • Desiring Arabs (2007), which received the Lionel Trilling Book Award
  • The Persistence of the Palestinian Question: Essays on Zionism and the Palestinian Question (2006)
  • Colonial Effects: The Making of National Identity in Jordan (2001)
