April Perkins is an instructor in the Department of Rhetoric and Composition and the English Language Institute at The American University in Cairo. She holds a master's in TESOL — teaching English to speakers of other languages — from the University of Central Florida and a bachelor's in French and German, with a minor in philosophy, from the University of Maine.
With a nearly 20-year career in language education, Perkins has taught English and trained teachers in the United States, Egypt, Morocco, Libya and India. Serving twice as an English Language Fellow through the US Department of State, she was recognized in 2019 in Washington, DC, with the Outstanding Alumni Award.
In addition to teaching, she served as the director of ESOL at the Maine Department of Education for six years and the director of multilingual programs at South Portland School Department in the state of Maine for nearly four years.
As a speaker of English, French, German, Portuguese and Egyptian Arabic, she enjoys exploring the intersection of language, music and literature in various cultures.
