Desalination May Help Increase Egypt's Fresh Water Supply

Currently, Egypt’s supply of fresh water relies on exploiting groundwater, reuse of treated wastewater, recycling of irrigation and agricultural drainage water, and desalination, which is the removal of salt from seawater and brackish water to obtain fresh water suitable for agriculture and human consumption. Although desalination has been used for decades in many countries, its main drawbacks are its large energy consumption and high cost of installation.
