The American University in Cairo and the Presidential Search Committee are pleased to announce the appointment of Francis J. Ricciardone as the 12th president of AUC. He assumes office as of July 1, 2016. A distinguished career diplomat and former ambassador, Ricciardone currently serves as vice president and director of the Rafik Hariri Center for the Middle East at the US-based Atlantic Council. Ricciardone served as US ambassador to Egypt from 2005 to 2008.
In 2015, the Board of Trustees announced the creation of a Presidential Search Committee to oversee the search for President Lisa Anderson’s successor. The committee engaged Russell Reynolds Associates, an international firm with a strong track record of partnering with educational institutions to find leaders who are respected scholars and administrators. As a first step in its process, Russell Reynolds met with the Presidential Search Committee members and then, based on feedback derived from a series of surveys and interviews with AUC stakeholders, the firm developed a position profile and solicit nominations for suitable candidates. The Presidential Search Committee kept the community apprised of its progress through periodic emails and this website.
