AUC Students Rise to the Challenge

أكتوبر 21, 2019

This Fall, AUC students excelled in a variety of corporate challenges and competitions. On October 21 and 22, the professional services firm Ernst & Young (EY) held the regional stage of its annual EY Young Tax Professional of the Year competition. High-performing Accounting, Finance, and Economics students from Egypt’s top universities gathered in EY’s Cairo office to learn about the company’s role in local and international markets and build their knowledge about the tax profession. Two AUC students competed successfully. Sherouk Abdelghafar, a senior studying Accounting and Finance, won second place, and Nourhan Amin, a senior studying Accounting, won third place. As participants, both Sherouk and Nourhan won the opportunity to intern with EY Cairo in their Tax, Audit, or Advisory departments during the summer of 2019.

Other AUC students showcased their creativity through the RB Global Challenge, sponsored by the consumer goods company Reckitt Benckiser (RB). Following a September information session about the challenge, which asked students to create a sustainable business plan using an RB product to address a social issue, 25 teams comprised of three AUC students each decided to enter. After completing the online Business Simulation Game, three AUC teams were shortlisted for the National Round. The team “Catalysts for Change” of AUCians Hania El Nasharty, a sophomore studying Psychology, Farah Korayem, a sophomore studying Communication and Media Arts, and Mohamed Ali emerged victorious. The three moved on to the RB Global Challenge Finale and competed with students from 19 other countries. Although visa complications, unfortunately, prevented the students from traveling to London to present their proposal, they competed virtually from the Reckitt Benckiser Egypt office in Cairo.

Challenges and competitions are great opportunities for AUC students of all majors to put their skills and academic knowledge to the test in real-world applications. In reflecting on her experience in the RB Global Challenge, Hania stated, “The entire experience required lots of hard work and effort, but it was great to see it pay-off. Even though I'm a psychology major, I love entering business competitions as they give me a well-rounded experience and overview of other fields. I learned things I would never have had the opportunity to such as financial concepts and supply chain.” AUC students and alumni find and register for competitions such as these on their CareerWEB accounts.
