Profile

Brief Biography

Thomas Skouteris is a Greek/Dutch jurist specialized in international law and related fields. He is an associate professor at the Department of Law and director of the Ibrahim Shihata Memorial LLM Program in International and Comparative Law. Before joining AUC in 2008, Skouteris taught at Leiden University (2000-2008) and worked as a research fellow at the T.M.C. Asser Institute in the Hague. He was also a senior fellow at the European Law Research Centre at Harvard Law School.

Skouteris received his BA in law in Greece (Democritos University, 1993) and continued his education at Leiden University in the Netherlands (LLM cum laude, 1996; PhD, 2008). His research and teaching interests span core and specialized issues of public international law, with an emphasis on normativity, theory and history of international law, globalization, dispute settlement and international criminal law. His publications include a monograph (The Notion of Progress in International Law Discourse (TMC Asser Press/Cambridge University Press, 2010)), two edited books, several articles and book chapters, as well as review essays and media articles. Skouteris also serves and has served as the editor-in-chief (currently as the general editor) of the Leiden Journal of International Law, advisory editor of the London Review of International Law and as a reviewer for several journals and publishers. He is one of the founding members and the first secretary-general of the Foundation for New Research in International Law, where he has also served as chair.
