VIA

VIA

Volunteers In Action (VIA) is a community service club in AUC. It is there since 1996. VIA aims to make a difference in the community, particularly by helping orphans and developing districts in need. This is done by providing them with financial support as well as developing their personalities and capabilities. To accomplish our goals we have launched four programs: Housing and Supplies, Literacy Program, Junior Development, and Children Program. Our projects so far have been extremely successful, however there is always more to accomplish. Our Four Programs: Housing & Supplies: This program is responsible for organizing and preparing several campaigns and events which are: - Ramadan Packs with the best quality and best price and distribute them on poor and needy families and also on orphanages. -It also aids many couples getting ready for marriage by helping them furnishing their homes - It prepares for the annual group wedding through the whole year. The annual group wedding is one of the major events in VI. It is held to share the happiness of the couples. The neediest couples are chosen according to certain criteria to celebrate their marriage with hope and blessing. In presence of honorable celebrities and great media coverage this event makes their wishes come true. - We don't forget the orphans in the Eid. In the Eid Keswa we give the orphans new or used clothes with a very good quality that we wash and pack to celebrate the feat with bright new clothes of their own. - In addition to this the committee also offers micro-projects to a member of a needy family who is willing to work for example micro loans can be given and kiosks can be established. Literacy Program: This program is dedicated to eliminating illiteracy. We target the elder women who don't know how to read and write. These women enter the official governmental literacy exam . Junior Development (JD): It helps children, in Meet 3o2ba, who are at school in their studies. We are also trying to develop their morals and ethics as we aid them into becoming better people by taking care of their behavior. This committee is responsible of: - Weekly sessions are held to keep track on the progress of the children. - Planting areas in Meet 3okba with the children to give them the opportunity to live in a better environment and teach them the importance of green areas and how to take good care of them. - Iftar at Meet 3okba with the children and their families in Ramadan. - Visiting them in Nady Al-Shabab at meet 3okba, and play with. We will get closer to their society and families and by this we will understand them more and understand their problems and therefore we will deal with them in a better way. - We teach them to get benefit of their talents, so we encourage them to make creative products and sell them. - Trips are organized to provide happiness with the children Children program: This program targets the orphans only. It provides orphans with the joy of care and happiness. This is done through several events and campaigns which are: - Weekly visits to different orphanage through the year. The visit helps in spreading joy and happiness to the children. It mainly consists of games and fun activities. -Weekly sessions, this is held during the academic year. We help them with their studies mainly English and also give them lessons about ethics. -Prepare A children’s day for the children to play, dance and then have a good meal and return happily to their orphanages. A Leading Community service club in the American University in Cairo since 1995 MISSON:To instill in ourselves the sense of responsiblity towards the challenges of our society, and to work professionally to build the future that we desire VISION:To develop into a learning organization that is self-sufficient, efficient, interesting and beneficial to its members as well as the community. OUR ACTIVITIES ARE DIVIDED INTO: - Awareness - Development - Charity _________________________________________ Awareness: One can not serve the community to his utmost ability unless he has the skills, experience, and general awareness of his external environment. We strive to equip our members with vision, the tools, and self motivation to serve the community. We achieve this objective in two main ways: 1- Self Awareness training sessions and workshops that ehance members' awareness of themselves while developing essential interpersonal skills 2- External Awareness campaigns targeting students on campus to raise awereness of local and global issues and promote proactive behavior. _________________________________________ Development: The Egyptian society is a very charitable one but civilization can not be built upon charity. Charity only supports the poor for a limited time and makes them more dependent on that helping hand. Our motto in development is "Give a man a fish and you'll feed him for a day, teach a man to fish and you'll feed him for a life time." Lao Tzu _________________________________________ Charity: Why Charity? Before development can be initiated we must establish trust with the community and they must feel that we sincerely care. We establish this trust by fulfilling the basic needs of the disadvantaged while supporting them to stand up on their feet. this phase is essential in the development process and in our social responsibility.

Any activity, that would serve any of these objectives, is considered. Last semester, we organized an out-of-class exponential learning experience. The training was delivered by “Quest” –a leading training company in the Middle East – and the training theme was “Emotional Intelligence for Leadership”. We also saw that most of the students’ activities target small number of students. We wanted to serve everyone. Since all our classes start at 6:00PM and ends at 09:00PM. A majority of our students takes a coffee in the class break. So we issues a discount card that gives large discounts (up to %60) that covers coffee, smoothies and food.
