Services Provided for Students
Medical advice is available to all members of the AUC community in the case of an emergency, either through a visit to the medical services office or by phone. All AUC community members may use the office in case of an emergency.
Travel Medical AdviceInformation and guidance about immunization requirements in parts of the world to which they will travel are available.
Vaccines and Other Injections
Vaccination services are available at the medical services office on an appointment basis. Vaccines are paid for in cash, as they are not covered by medical insurance. We provide assistance in setting up schedules for vaccines and other injections.
**Please note that international students have to get the following vaccinations before coming to Egypt according to CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) recommendations:
- Hepatitis A and typhoid vaccinations are essential. In some cases, hepatitis B is required too.
- In case the student is coming from South Africa, vaccination against yellow fever is required.
Medicine is dispensed through the medical insurance plan of each student. AUC Office of Medical Services is no longer responsible for dispensing medications to AUC dorms students nor international students.
Students who feel unwell at the University campus may stop by the Office of Medical Services to be examined by an AUC physician. If needed, these students will be given a certificate of care indicating the time, date, and healthcare services provided to them at AUC Office of Medical Services. If their case indicated referral to Hospitals within their medical insurance company’s medical network, medical reports indicating the duration of medical excuse should be obtained from these hospitals.
Students who are unable to attend classes while being off-campus due to an illness are requested to follow the following steps:
1- Specific to SARS-COV-2 (virus) and COVID-19 (illness)
When the Medical Services Clinic receives medical reports indicating a student is positive for or highly suspected of infection with SARS-COV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, the following process occurs:
1. The online system informs the Dean of Students, who emails all faculty who teach that student.
2. The email from the Dean of Students will ask faculty who have had face to face (F2F) contact with that student to inform other students in the class that the class will move to an online mode of instruction for the isolation interval as of the date stated in the email. Since our policy is not to share medical information, we ask faculty not to share with students any names or personal data, except the reason for having to move online for the following week.
3. In all cases, there should be no F2F contact with any student from the class in which the case was identified for the isolation interval following our notification by email of a highly suspected or positive case.
The online system also informs the Office of Residential Life when the student with a positive or highly suspected case lives in the Student Residences (the dorms).
2- For non-SARS-COV-2 concerns. (all other conditions/illnesses):
As per the sick leave policy by the Dean of Students
- Illness Verification:
- For illnesses of short duration (fewer than five (5) calendar days), a student must deal directly with his/her faculty with regard to requests for make-ups, as the Medical Services Clinic can no longer verify an illness of short duration. The faculty member has the right to accept or reject the student's explanation for the absence. The absence policy still applies, but the faculty member is not obliged to make rearrangements for missed assignments/assessments.
- For absences due to illness of five or more calendar days, the student must inform the Office of the Dean of Students and provide a report from a verified medical practitioner clarifying the reason for the lengthy absence. A list of hospitals has been provided to all students detailing the hospitals whose medical personnel are verified by AUC. Once the Office of the Dean of Students receives verification of the illness, it will send a request to faculty for rearrangement, as has been the practice in the past.
- Support for Lengthy Illnesses:
The Office of the Dean of Students is responsible for following up with periodic updates should a student with a verified illness be absent for a lengthy period of time. When the Office of the Dean of Students has information that the student will be out for a lengthy period, the Office of the Dean of Students will inform faculty teaching that student so that faculty can inform the student of the best course of action (drop, incomplete, make-ups)
