Instructional Designer, Digital Education, Center for Learning and Teaching (50031305)

Reports to: Manager, Instructional Design, Digital Education

Purpose: Under the supervision of the instructional design manager, this position entails working closely and collaboratively with faculty members, CLT staff, and student technology assistants to provide educational support and develop online or blended learning courses or modules. This individual is primarily charged with collaborating with CLT staff in supporting faculty on active learning strategies, course design and in creating e-learning, interactive video, and other multimedia content to be used both synchronously and asynchronously. This position will provide faculty with instructional design assistance including web-based applications, learning management system and digital media. In addition, he/she assists instructors on a variety of content authoring resources.

Principal Accountabilities:

Provide pedagogical and instructional consultancy to faculty teaching in online, blended or web-enhanced formats:

  • Develop appropriate instructional strategies for different digital contexts using the principles of universal design to make materials accessible to different learners
  • Collaborate with other CLT members in strategic or large projects involving the instructional design of any program
  • Lead the planning of instructional materials for specific pedagogical objectives
  • In collaboration with CLT multimedia officers and others at CLT, provide guidance to faculty in adopting new technologies, and in using these technologies to improve teaching and learning
  • Participate in the continual assessment of CLT's programs and services in support of digital education
  • Lead the assessment of small projects they are involved in
  • Participate in the process of designing and developing eLearning content, including multimedia and eLearning modules working closely with CLT staff, faculty or content matter experts
  • Participate in applying design methodologies for e-learning
  • Assist in the design of authentic assessments and engaging course content incorporating active learning strategies
  • Design and develop e-learning content, including multimedia and eLearning modules working closely with CLT staff, faculty or content matter experts
  • Exhibit a creative, flexible and innovative approach to course design
  • Exhibit and apply knowledge and use of content authoring resources including, but not limited to, video presentation, podcasting, animation, screen, and video capture, and interactive multimedia

Assist in activities and objectives of the digital education initiative and CLT:

  • Design and facilitate workshops offered to faculty
  • Design and facilitate training given to Student Technology Assistants (STAs)
  • Participate in evaluation and testing of STAs
  • Mentor STAs
  • Supervise STAs on projects where their support is needed
  • Participate in the evaluation of the performance of STAs
  • Engage in professional development programs or workshops for own career path
  • Participate in updating the recommended and available tools and pedagogies available to faculty via CLT, by evaluating trends in educational technology for relevance to CLT context
  • Assist the instructional design manager in evaluating and reporting on the latest trends in educational technology of relevance to AUC and worth piloting at AUC
  • Participate in the facilitation of an in-house professional development program for the CLT
  • Mentor, train, and provide guidance to newly hired CLT staff within the digital education context
  • Assist in classroom action projects pertaining to digital education
  • Participate in CLT’s event organization as pertaining to digital education
  • Perform any other related tasks as assigned

Requirements:

Minimum Education Requirement: Bachelor’s degree, a master’s degree in a related field preferred

Experience:

  • Minimum 10 years of experience with a minimum of four years of experience working with e-learning software
  • Minimum of two years of experience in instructional design or instructional technology support 
  • Experience supporting blended, flipped, or online courses in a higher education environment
  • Experience in training faculty
  • Experience using technology (in an educational environment)
  • Excellent knowledge of learning management systems and Web 2.0
