International Academic Advising
Advising and Registration
The Office of International Programs and Services (IPSO) is responsible for academic advising and registration for incoming study abroad, non-degree undergraduate and graduate international students. IPSO also assists these students with follow-up sessions during the drop/add period and throughout the semester.
Full-Time Academic Load
Fall and Spring Semesters: 12 - 15 credit hours for undergraduate students and nine credit hours for graduate students.
Summer Semester: The summer semester is a six-week period. The maximum load for summer enrollment at AUC is six credit hours (two courses).
Summer Intensive Semester: The summer intensive semester is a three-week period. You can only take one course from the three-week summer session (A) and/or one course from the three-week summer session (B).
Important Note: You can only take two courses from the six-week summer session or one course from the three-week summer intensive session (A) and/or one course from the three-week summer intensive session (B). You can not combine courses from the summer semester and the summer intensive semester.
Winter Semester: Three credit hours (one course).
Overload: In the fall and spring semesters, undergraduate students can take up to 18 credits, and graduate students can take up to 12 credit hours - paying an additional fee for the extra three credits. Both AUC and your home university advisers must approve all overloads (for exchange students only).
Once you are accepted as a non-degree international student, below are some steps you need to follow to start your advising:
- Create an AUC email here
- Check the class schedule. This step is essential for your advising. Course descriptions are available in the AUC course catalog. Email the Office of International Programs and Services (IPSO) at email@example.com to request a course syllabus
- Complete your Preliminary Course Planning Form (PCP) here
Undergraduate Students: For fall and spring semesters, it is mandatory to fill in five courses and at least three alternative courses on your PCP form. For the summer semester, only fill in two courses and at least two alternative courses. 1000-2000-3000-4000 are undergraduate-level courses.
Graduate Students: For fall and spring semesters, it is mandatory to fill in three courses and at least two alternative courses on your PCP form. For the summer semester, only fill in two courses and at least two alternative courses. 5000 level is a graduate-level course.
- Submit your PCP as soon as you can to ensure availability in classes. Once you submit your PCP form, your IPO advisor will evaluate the courses and register you during the registration period.
Tips for Non-Degree Undergraduate and Graduate Students
- If you are an undergraduate student, you can enroll in a graduate 5200-level course with permission from the professor and the IPO academic advisor. You must send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org with a short paragraph stating why you want to take the course, your academic preparation for that course and how the course fits into your academic career plans.
- Make sure that you fulfilled the prerequisites for the courses, as noted in the AUC catalog.
- Before your arrival at AUC, make sure to take the approval of the courses from your home institution to make sure that the credits will be transferred back to your home institution.
- Most AUC classes meet on Sunday and Wednesday or Monday and Thursday. 5000-level courses and special seminars meet once a week.
- Enrollment in requested courses cannot be guaranteed.
- IPO registers you in all your general courses. For Arabic courses, the Department of Arabic Language Institute will register you.
