- Undergraduate students in Academic Community Engagement (ACE) in the Department of Rhetoric and Composition course Writing for Publication and Research Writing interviewed Sudanese refugees living in Egypt, compiled their oral narratives and published them as a collection called Voices in Refuge from AUC Press.

"Voices in Refuge reflects the voices of individuals bound together by dislocation, nationality and history. It presents stories, relayed by Sudanese refugees to a group of students at The American University in Cairo, that go beyond the image of refugees as victims, and deals with issues as varied as the government, non-state actors, civil society, marriage, religious strife and family values. Through the perspectives of the young and old, the male and female, the Muslim and Christian, and the mother and father, the stories transcend the horrors of genocide to demonstrate a more shared human experience — an experience, we hope, will counter the apathy with which Sudan's trauma has been treated."
