Learning and Teaching Continuity Plan

Preparing Faculty to Teach Remotely

The following is a plan to prepare all faculty (full-time and adjunct) to continue classes online should the need arise. The plan outlines the strategy to train faculty (who need it) on a specific set of online teaching and learning tools that instructors commonly use. The Center for Learning and Teaching (CLT) will be leading this endeavor in collaboration with all relevant IT offices.

Online Resources

Overview

CLT has determined that three tools within Blackboard, AUC’s learning management system, together with the lecture-capturing tool Panopto would be important tools to satisfy most faculty teaching and assessment needs.

These tools will allow faculty to:

  1. Communicate with students and share learning materials, and/or

  2. Record lectures with video and PowerPoint presentation, and/or

  3. Upload assignments, give feedback online and grade, and/or

  4. Post and conduct online discussions

The plan is to ensure that all faculty are able to use these basic tools.

Faculty Sign-Up and Training Sessions

  • CLT has launched the training sessions on Thursday, March 5, 2020, and will continue daily from March 8 - March 17 from 9:00 am - 4:30 pm excluding Friday, March 13, 2020. Training is taking place in the Library rooms 1021 and P052.

  • Training sessions will run during a morning slot from 9:00 am - 1:00 pm and an afternoon slot from 1:00 pm – 4:30 pm.

  • Trainers will be at stations designated for one of the tools mentioned above, and each faculty can choose the tool(s) they wish to be trained on. It is expected that on average a faculty member will need 30 minutes/tool.

  • There will be a designated space for faculty to practice on their own and a CLT student technology assistant will be at hand in case help is needed.

  • Faculty members must sign-up the registration form below to select a day, choose either a morning slot or an afternoon slot, and indicate the requested training.

  • Faculty members are asked to arrive at the half-hour or hour to catch the training session at its start.

  • Faculty members are asked to adhere to their chosen slot, allowing the designated training team to manage the anticipated demand on this service.

Confirmation of Attendance

  • Department chairs will be the main point of communication with the Office of the Provost and with associate provost for transformative learning and teaching.

  • Department chairs need to submit a complete list of all full-time and adjunct faculty by Wednesday, March 4, 2020, identifying the faculty members who confirm that they will not require this training. Faculty members who are confident that they can continue instruction remotely should communicate their plan to the department chair. This is to ensure that all department chairs are aware of any alternate plans and approve them.

  • Department chairs who prefer doing it differently should inform the provost of their plans or their department plans.

Tracking Completion

  • All faculty members who complete the training will receive electronic confirmation of completion within 48 hours

  • Department chairs will receive departmental completion lists regularly.

We strongly recommend that all faculty practice using the tools with their students, to be prepared in case of any disruption.
