I have no idea what to major in. What should I do?

  • When thinking of a major, consider your skills and talents, not only your interest.
  • Read the AUC Catalog, Freshman Brochure and talk to your advisor or any Faculty Advisors of your preferred major.
  • The Career Advising and Placement Services (CAPS) located at 5, Youssef El Guindi (3rd floor) provides a wealth of information about career planning to help students asses their own interests and abilities.
  • Career goals should certainly be one consideration when choosing a major, but by no means the only one. Employers in any field are more interested in what a potential applicant can do, rather than what his/her major was.
  • If you are drawn to a major because of genuine interest and curiosity about the subject, chances are you will feel at home with peers within the same field. On the other hand, if you choose a major only based on your parents’ expectations, or because you think it will lead to a high paying job, you may feel out of place and uncomfortable.

Can I change my major after declaration?

  • Yes, you can change your field of study at any time up to the end of the junior year. Students may not change their major after the start of their senior year, unless by university action.

How can I find out the deadlines for dropping/adding classes?

  • Dates and deadlines are found under the Academic Calendar in the schedule of classes and also online at http://student.aucegypt.edu (click on important dates).

I don’t like one of my classes, can I just stop attending it?

  • No, you cannot. You have to officially drop the course by filling a drop form, get it signed by your advisor and hand it to the Registrar's Office in due time.Deadlines for dropping courses are stated in the Schedule of Classes and also online at http://student.aucegypt.edu 

Will someone inform me about when to go for advising, when to register for courses online, and when to declare my major?

  • When you enter University, you are treated as an adult and expected to read more.
  • Deadlines are listed in the Schedule of Classes, and are announced in the Channel (a weekly newsletter issued on Mondays and can be found at the University’s gates).

Am I required to be a full time student ? How many credits do I need?

  • Yes, you are required to be a full time student or else you will risk loosing your scholarship, financial aid, and the university will not be responsible for issuing any official documents concerning enrollment and military service etc.
  • Full time status requires a minimum of 12 credits per semester. However, if you want to graduate without delay you need to register for at least 15 credits.

What will happen if I get low grades? 

  • If your overall/cumulative GPA is below a 2.00 (that is a “C” average), you will be put on academic probation.
  • Students on academic probation risk the possibility of disqualification.
  • You need to speak with your advisor to discuss your academic progress.
  • You also need to talk to the Student Mentoring Unit (5 Youssef El Guindi St., 3rd Floor) so that they can help you in enhancing your academic skills.

How is my GPA calculated? 

  • Each letter grade is assigned a value (called points):
    For example an A=4.0, B=3.0, C=2.0 
  • For each course you have taken, multiply the number of credits of the course by the value of each grade you received. For example:

Now, divide the quality points by the number of credits to get your semester GPA.
40.9/13 = 3.146

Where can I look up Academic Policies?

  • All the policies and university wide regulations regarding courses, exams, grades, graduation, transferring etc. are available online http://student.aucegypt.edu, or you can simply read the AUC catalog that you were given by the Admissions Office.
  • If you need help understanding policies, see your advisor.

Is MATH 131 a pass/fail course?

  • It is only a pass/fail course for declared Engineering, Computer Science and Physics students.
  • For undeclared Freshmen, your grade is included in the Cumulative GPA for declaration.
