Academic Integrity Committee (AIC)


The Academic Integrity Committee is the judicial body that deals with student violations of academic integrity.


The Academic Integrity Committee (AIC) consists of thirteen voting members who are nominated at the beginning of each academic year (or every two years). The AIC chair shall be a tenured faculty member elected by the AIC voting members at its first meeting of the year. The representatives are: 

  1. Five faculty representatives from each of the five schools:  the School of Continuing Education, School of Global Affairs and Public Policy, School of Business, School of Humanities and Social Sciences, School of Sciences and Engineering.

  2. One faculty member representing the Academy of Liberal Arts (ALA).

  3. One faculty member representing the Senate.

  4. One faculty member representing the Libraries and Learning Technologies.

  5. One senior staff member representing the Office of the Vice President for Student Life.

  6. Two senior staff members or faculty members nominated by the Provost.

  7. Two student representatives nominated by the Graduate Students Association and the Student Court, respectively.

Duties and Responsibilities

Members are requested to familiarize themselves with AUC’s Code of Academic Ethics and the academic integrity sanctions matrix. The AIC shall hold regularly scheduled meetings, as well as special meetings to handle urgent and/or special cases. Regularly scheduled meetings may be canceled if there are no agenda items. Official meetings may be held if a quorum of at least five voting members is achieved. At its regular or special meetings, the AIC shall process individual cases of allegations of violations of the Academic Integrity Code in accordance with the recommendations outlined in the procedures. The AIC shall ensure that both the accused and accuser have a full and fair hearing. The Academic Integrity Committee's decision will be communicated by email to the student. All cases will be handled with strict confidentiality. The Academic Integrity Office case manager will be responsible for recording minutes and for other record-keeping. Quorum is achieved when five voting members are present.

Council on Academic Integrity (CAI)

The Council on Academic Integrity (CAI) aims at enhancing awareness of academic integrity on campus among students, faculty, and staff. It reviews and proposes relevant policies and procedures and reports directly to the provost.
Since enhancing awareness of academic integrity is an ongoing concern, the CAI meets regularly to discuss issues of importance to the AUC community. It liaises with other University bodies in order to continuously keep the issue of academic integrity in the public arena. These include -but are not limited to-the Freshman Year Experience, the New Faculty Orientation Program, the Student Union, and the Academic Integrity Committee.

Appeals Committee

The Appeals Committee examines appeal requests submitted by students in accordance with the recommendations outlined in the appeal procedures. The committee, which consists of three faculty members, reviews and decides appeals based on the record of the initial proceeding and any written submissions from the parties involved. Consideration of an appeal does not include meetings with any of the parties. The committee could affirm the finding and modify the sanction, affirm both the finding and the sanction, or remand the case to the Academic Integrity Committee to be re-heard. The Appeal’s Committee's decision is communicated by email to the student.
