What to Expect when Learning Online 

Learning in Real-Time

As part of your online learning experience, you may be learning in different ways such as virtually attending a class session, meetings with your instructors, and/or tutorials via a videoconference tool such as Zoom.

Participate in an Online Class Via Zoom 

Your instructor may use Zoom to conduct a live lesson or a meeting online. In this case, you will need to have a microphone and webcam (built-in or connected to your computer) if the instructor requires audio and video participation. 

Learning at Your Own Pace 

During these challenging times, you could take the opportunity of learning at your own pace. Setting your study schedule is more flexible with online learning while having access to content, resources, and other useful material provided by your instructors. Learning Management Systems (LMS) facilitate having access to all material shared by your instructor and also facilitate communication.

Stay Connected 

  • AUC Email 

Access your AUC email frequently for notifications and all course correspondence. Instructors will send announcements and notifications to your AUC email

  • Make sure you can access Blackboard

Blackboard is the learning management system that AUC uses to host all academic courses. It is important that you know how to navigate your course to make sure that your assignments are turned in on time, you know how to communicate with your instructor and classmates, and you know where to go to keep up to date on class requirements. 

  • Turnitin

Check the Turnitin Support Center if you are facing any difficulty submitting your work on Turnitin. If you have more questions after looking at the FAQs, email eda@aucegypt.edu (turnitin issues only), providing your name, the name of the class you are having Turnitin issues with and the name of the instructor teaching this class.

General Tips for Online Learning

Here are some tips for succeeding in your online course.

  • Stay Connected: reach out to your instructors, teaching assistants and peers when you need help or have a question. 

  • Limit Distractions: Claim a space in your home and stick to the routine.

  • Set Aside Time: Make sure you can spend the time needed to do a good job on the course.

  • Be Self-motivated and Self-disciplined. You will need to log into your course(s) regularly. It’s easy to fall behind in an online course. Create your weekly work calendar; stick to it and don’t be afraid to re-adjust.

  • Participate and share your experience, ideas, and perspective with your instructor and other students.

  • Be able to communicate through writing and use good “netiquette” when communicating online.

  • Be willing to “speak up” if problems arise. Your instructor needs to know right away if you are having any problems with the technology or the course requirements.

While we know many of you enjoy meeting your faculty via videoconferencing, remember that some faculty and students have inconsistent or poor internet, or may need to share devices/wifi with other members of their household, or have other responsibilities. It is not always easy to manage a fruitful synchronous session. Also, appreciate the amount of effort your teacher puts into pre-recording videos for you that you can watch and pause and rewatch at your own pace. These will be helpful study guides. Faculty will be working hard to find a balance between work you can do on your own, such as viewing a lecture online, assignments, activities or readings, and the real-time connection as a group or class via zoom.

Netiquette

When participating in online classes you will be speaking through writing and, at times, through audio or video to your instructors and fellow students, so it is imperative that you communicate clearly and professionally. Setting and following these simple netiquette rules in your online class will ensure your success.

  1. Show respect for the instructor and for other students in the class

  2. Respect the privacy of other students

  3. Express differences of opinion in a polite, rational, and professional way

  4. Share constructive feedback when commenting on the work of other students

  5. Avoid bringing up irrelevant topics when involved in group discussions or other collaborative activities

Unacceptable Behaviors

The following list summarizes the kind of behavior that is not acceptable. Each item listed below could be brought forth for judicial action and possible removal from the class.

  1. Showing disrespect for the instructor or for other students in the class

  2. Sending messages or comments that are threatening, harassing, unprofessional, or offensive

  3. Using inappropriate or offensive language

  4. Conveying a hostile or confrontational tone when communicating or working collaboratively with other students

  5. USING ALL-UPPERCASE WORDS IN MESSAGES OR DISCUSSION TEXT -- THIS IS THE EQUIVALENT OF SHOUTING!

If your professor feels that a student is violating any of the above guidelines, the student will be contacted to discuss the situation privately. If you feel that a fellow student is behaving inappropriately, send your professor a private email message explaining the situation as soon as possible.

 

Technology Requirements for a Successful Online Experience

Prepare for a smooth online learning experience. For the best results, you will need the following hardware and software:

  • Reliable access to a computer (Windows or Mac)

  • RAM (Memory): 512 MB (1 GB or more preferred)

  • Hard Drive: 1 GB free space

  • Internet access and a compatible browser 

  • Webcam and headset for audio with speaker/microphone capability

  • You are encouraged to use Firefox or Chrome to access your courses

  • If you are using a mobile device, we recommend downloading the Blackboard Student App  

You are expected to be competent in basic computer skills such as:

  • Using the basic features of Microsoft Word (or other word processing) document

  • Saving, attaching, and printing word processing files and similar documents

  • Composing, retrieving, and sending emails

  • Surfing the web

  • Protecting your computer against viruses

Check your Browser

Use this link to check whether your web browser is compatible with Blackboard. The tool will identify any items that need to be updated for you to use Blackboard. 

For Student Group Presentations Using Zoom

This section is intended for students who need to substitute their class presentations with an online pre-recorded or live presentation. Here are the steps needed to conduct a group presentation via Zoom, record and share your video recorded presentation with others. 

Before you Start 

  • Install Zoom application on your device

  • Prepare your presentation (e.g. on PowerPoint or Google Slides)

  • Open a space to host files (e.g. Google Drive)

Students Guidelines for Taking Monitored Online Assessments and Respondus

This guide will help you understand what to expect when you will be given an online exam that will be monitored using Respondus Monitor.
