Senior Officer, Research

Reports to:  Principal Investigator (PI)

Purpose: This position is a research post created as part of the international collaborative project. The project aims at improving the knowledge base on violent extremism in the MENA region and the Balkans by adopting an interdisciplinary and empirically-oriented approach. The Senior Officer, research will play a central role in coordinating the research activities of the AUC team, under the supervision of the PI, and – among other duties – will contribute to delivering research reports, conducting fieldwork and managing research assistants.

 

Principal Accountabilities:

Research duties

  • Conducting desk research on the Egyptian case
  • Coordinating the research team in collecting, elaborating and collating empirical data, preparing the integrated data set, and submitting the data to the connect data pool
  • Supervising up to three research assistants and sharing with them the task of conducting interviews and content analysis
  • Researching and writing single-country data analysis as required by the work package leaders

Managerial duties

  • Acting as the main point of contact of the AUC team with the work package leaders and project managers
  • Coordinating and managing the day-to-day running of fieldwork in empirical work packages of the project
  • Organizing two international workshops related to working package five
  • Ensuring and monitoring the regular submission of project deliverables and reports
  • Coordinating with other relevant offices at AUC responsible for the financial and administrative running of the project, as required by the AUC PI

 

Requirements:

Minimum Education Requirement:  

  • Minimum a postgraduate (master’s) degree in a relevant discipline, preferably Political Science / Mediterranean studies (essential)
  • A PhD in a relevant discipline is desirable

Experience:

  • Minimum 10 years of experience. Six of them must be as researcher/research assistant in relevant research fields, ideally including youth mobilization and the modern history of Islam in Egypt
  • Knowledge and expertise in contemporary Egyptian politics is a must
  • Experience in conducting fieldwork in Egypt and content analysis is essential
  • Experience in organizing events or workshops is a plus

Skills:

  • Proficiency in both English and Arabic
  • Experience with content-analysis software is preferred
  • Willingness to travel within Egypt if required
