Senior Lab Teaching Engineer I, Computer Science and Engineering Department (10001177)

Reports to: Associate Chair, Course instructors

Purpose: The job holder is responsible for supervising the assigned labs, providing the necessary support for (faculty, researchers, teaching assistants, graduate/undergraduate students and external customers), including supervising the installation, operation and maintenance of lab equipment, assisting in procurement vendors including market surveys and the collection of price quotations, and spare parts, training equipment users, supervising equipment operation, setting up and managing the equipment operation schedule, organizing workflow, ensuring lab safety and represent the department of Computer Science engineering in university and school events. In addition, the job holder is responsible for assisting instructors of courses to which he/she is assigned as a teaching assistant in facilitating learning activities inside and outside the classroom and the laboratory.


Principal Accountabilities:

  • Assists in managing maintenance operations and contracting for the department

  • Assists in managing Inventory and placement operations for equipment and devices for the department

  • Assists in supervising and maintain CSCE technical staff overtime as needed

  • Assists in maintaining petty cash expenses and reimbursement for different invoices for technical material

  • Supervising the assigned labs’ (Dimensions/Financial)

  • Reporting a daily attendance status for his subordinates/himself

  • Supervising the cleanliness of the lab workplace, equipment and tools

  • Ensuring assigned labs’ readiness for any technical task within its predetermined mission

  • Operating and maintaining all assigned labs’ assets (machines, equipment, tools and infrastructure)

  • Procuring consumables/simple supplies from local market vendors and perform any required market survey

  • Contacting the vendors to get price quotations for any required items

  • Maintaining an updated inventory of all lab items (equipment, devices, tools, consumables)

  • Assisting in setting and conducting experiments in the assigned labs

  • Supporting the faculty/teaching assistant members in the courses assigned to them (Dimensions/Non-Financial)

  • Assisting faculty members in the development of lab manuals and procedures

  • Technical and administrative assistance of faculty and students in various courses, development projects, senior projects, and grants

  • Facilitating the projects/research endeavors of the undergraduate/ graduate students, in their thesis as well as researchers and professor’s in their research activities/grants and engineering services

  • Keeping awareness and reporting of new/required developments in his/her supervised equipment/machines

  • Keeping continuous training of his/her subordinates making sure they all are competent using all the labs’ assets

  • Attending and observing classes of the course to which they are assigned

  • Recording attendance in classes and labs in the presence of the course instructor

  • Supporting students in carrying out experimental and/or creative work in labs

  • Assisting in preparing answer keys for assignments, where applicable

  • Assisting in grading the quantitative components of the course, weighted assessments such as assignments, quizzes, reports and exams (quantitative components are those which can be graded with a key, not requiring the grader to make judgment calls)

  • Assisting in recording and/or calculating students’ grades, which are not the final course grades

  • Assisting in uploading course material onto online course management tools (e.g. Blackboard)

  • Assisting in preparing course material under the guidance of the course instructor

  • Conducting revision, review, and/or problem sessions which do not require the introduction of new materials to students

  • Leading in-class discussions and group activities which do not require the introduction of new materials to students

  • Assisting in proctoring quizzes and/or exams, in the presence of the course instructor

  • Supporting students seeking technical assistance

  • Performing software development and systems administration

  • Holding office hours

  • Other relevant tasks as deemed fit by the supervisor

  • Ensuring a safe and clean work environment within the assigned labs and its premises in coordination with the AUC “Health and Safety” department.

  • Applying the safety regulations/precautions, safety work practices and immediately report any safety violation incident/condition or potential hazards

  • Monitoring first aid kits, fire-fighting equipment and safety gears in coordination with the AUC “clinic” and “Health and Safety” department

  • Conducting Experiments: Lots of experiments in the lab and machines have to be operated and explained to the students so they know how to work on them in the future which is the responsibility of the lab engineer to explain to them how they work

  • Maintaining Lab Equipment, Machines and Safety: Laboratory equipment and machines used in the courses or research are maintained and in good shape. Since some machines may become hazardous to the unwary, it is the responsibility of the lab engineer to maintain a safe environment to work in. Hence, safety regulations must be followed and implemented in the lab

  • Assisting in Research, Grants and Engineering Services: Since the lab engineer has constant exposure to lab equipment and machines; it will be advantageous when the lab engineer takes research assignments and works on them. These assignments include running simulation experiments, optimization models and data analysis

  • Organizing Workflow: There are lots of courses, research assistants, teaching assistants and inter-lab connections which requires lots of planning and organization so that neither the teaching nor the research is impacted

  • Procuring Consumables/Simple Supplies: Students, faculty and research assistants require lots of consumables/simple supplies that need to be supplied to them to do their projects and research on which entails that the lab engineer/supervisor seek the best sources for procurement. Equipment and machines are procured as well in order to elevate the research capabilities of the research groups working in the labs


Minimum Education Requirement(s):

  • Bachelor or master degree in computer science or engineering or other related fields with high academic standing. Preferred minimum of five years of experience in the domain.


  • Knowledge of core computing skills relevant to the domain, preferably in the areas of systems such as operating, mobile, embedded, networking, microelectronics and architecture


  • Good background about the latest technologies such as robotics, embedded systems, programming, 3D design, IOT, electronics circuits, arduino and Raspberry Pi

  • Capable of communicating in English fluently orally and in writing

  • Time management and planning skills

  • Good interpersonal skills

  • Good communication skills

  • Good written and spoken Arabic

  • Good troubleshooting and fault isolation skills

  • Equipment handling and maintenance hands-on

  • Can perform under pressure and within a team
