Lab Engineer I, Materials, Mechanical Engineering, School of Science and Engineering (10001968 )

Reports to:  Technical Operations Manager and Department Chair

Purpose The job holder is responsible for supervising the assigned labs, providing the necessary support for (faculty, researchers, teaching assistants, graduate/undergraduate students and external customers) including supervising the installation operation and maintenance of lab equipment, assisting in equipment procurement, including market surveys and the collection of price quotations, and spare parts, training users of the equipment, supervising equipment operation, setting up and managing the equipment operation schedule, organizing workflow, ensuring lab safety and represent the department of mechanical engineering in university and school events.

Principal Accountabilities:

  • Supervise the assigned labs in the Department of Mechanical Engineering
  • Report a daily attendance status for his subordinates/himself
  • Supervise the cleanliness of the lab workplace, equipment, and tools
  • Ensure assigned labs readiness for any technical task within its predetermined mission
  • Operate and maintain all assigned labs’ assets (machines, equipment, tools, and infrastructure)
  • Procure consumables/simple supplies from local market vendors and perform any required market survey
  • Contact the vendors to get price quotations for any required items
  • Maintain an updated inventory of all lab items (equipment, devices, tools, consumables etc...)
  • Seek the best sources for procurement to elevate the research capabilities of the research groups working in the labs. 
  • Prepare the equipment operational guide for users
  • Assist in setting and conducting experiments in the assigned labs
  • Support the faculty/teaching assistant members in the required courses
  • Assist the faculty members in the development of lab manuals and procedures
  • Explain to students how to conduct the required experiments
  • Assist in research, grants and engineering services: take research assignments and work on them as running simulation experiments, optimization models and data analysis
  • Facilitate the projects/research endeavors of the undergraduate/ graduate students, in their thesis as well as researchers and professors in their research activities/grants and engineering services
  • Keep awareness and report of new/required developments in his supervised equipment/machines
  • Keep continuous training of his subordinates making sure they all are competent using all the labs’ assets
  • Carry out varies manual tasks using manual tools
  • Ensure a safe and clean work environment within the assigned labs and its premises in coordination with the AUC's health and safety
  • Apply the safety regulations/precautions, safety work practices and immediately report any safety violation incident/condition or potential hazards
  • Monitor first aid kits, fire-fighting equipment, and safety gears in coordination with the AUC clinic
  • Organize Workflow as there are lots of courses, research assistants, teaching assistants and inter-lab connections which require lots of planning and organization so that neither the teaching nor the research is impacted
  • Perform any other related tasks as assigned

Requirements:

Minimum education requirement: BSc in mechanical engineering with specialization in materials, production and/or design. MSc degree is a plus

Experience:  At least five years of experience with the prior experience of two years in a related field

 Skills:

  • Capable of communicating in English fluently orally and in writing
  • Time management and planning skills
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Good communication skills
  • Good written and spoken Arabic
  • Working experience of Windows, Microsoft office, other computer skill is preferable
  • Good troubleshooting and fault isolation skills
  • Equipment handling and maintenance hands-on
  • Can perform under pressure and within a team
