Reports to: Senior Academic Advisor

Purpose: Ensure that all undeclared students receive the best possible academic guidance for their stated academic goals through the Freshman Advising services, and monitor the advising process to provide service excellence.

Principal Accountabilities: 

  • Participate in statistical reports on student enrollment, intentions of major and declaration acceptances. Once per semester.
  • Advise undeclared students regarding their intended majors and explain core curriculum requirements. Four times annually.
  • Assist ELI and newly admitted students in finalizing their course schedule and register it on Banner. Two times annually.
  • Check students web registration to ensure that they follow their intended major paths and AUC rules and regulations. Three times annually.
  • Monitor and follow up students performance by checking grades and credits, and guide them accordingly. Two times annually.
  • Generate lists of undeclared students to select those who meet the requirements for the declaration of different majors. Two times annually.
  • Participate in the academic orientation that is held to all new comers during their first advising session. According to schedule.
  • Monitors office logistics during drop and add week.
  • Refer students to other on-campus resources (academic and non-academic offices/departments) based on their inquiries. All year round.
  • Attend conferences to help improve the advising system.
  • Design the academic orientation to be presented to new applicants during their advising session to explain AUC’s academic system, introduce the Core Curriculum, the grading system and explain important academic regulations (e.g. academic load, probation).
  • Provide academic guidance to students in terms of their choices, by providing adequate information about AUC’s academic programs, policies, and procedures as a contribution to the University’s objective in producing a well-rounded generation.
  • Establish advising processes to ensure the accuracy and quality of academic advising delivered to students.
  • Develop and maintain a comprehensive student records for all undeclared students until their declaration.
  • Motivate and advise students to explore different academic careers to enhance their decision making and major choices.
  • Motivate and coach the academic advisers to achieve high quality results consistent with AUC’s standards. 
  • Plan and monitor the logistics of the Advising Center.
  • Follow up to ensure tasks are completed and commitments are met by others. 
  • Support others in generating new work methods.
  • Identify high potential individuals and provide them with opportunities for growth to ensure the development of the advising staff.
  • Effectively use both formal and informal channels to facilitate the progress of work to achieve “win/win” solutions.
  • Performs one or more of the following tasks:
    • Design an effective academic plan for at risk students to follow. The plan should include referrals to other resources on campus (when needed), a schedule of meetings with academic advisors for at-risk students to follow, incentives and encouragement plans to students who display academic progression. 
    • Develop an early alert system, to detect at-risk students who might go on-probation, before they actually do. Try to help them out, coach and advise them to prevent them from getting on-probation.
    • Refer students to other on campus resources (academic and non-academic offices/departments) based on their inquiries. All year round.
    • Represent the Academic Advising Center in University wide committees and task forces. 
    • Assist in creating a clear internal and external advising process. 
    • Support students with disability in their academic journey till graduation.

Requirements
Minimum Education Requirement: AUC graduate
Experience: A minimum of six years of previous experience including three years in related fields. 
Skills: 

  • Excellent command of English and Arabic (spoken/written).
  • Excellent communication/interpersonal skills and student oriented.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize the work flow along with meeting deadlines.
  • Have the drive and stamina to deal with the complexity of the work.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team and ability to motivate the advising team.
  • Problem solving, decision making and analytical skills and critical judgment.
  • Excellent computer skills in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access).
