  Annual Report to 6th Advisory Board Meeting  

As the Gerhart Center celebrates its fifth anniversary, we marvel at the changes that are sweeping the region. A young generation is breaking through old assumptions and demanding new forms of accountability. Accumulated tensions in society are playing out in an arena in which the ‘rules of the game’ have not yet been reset. In the uncertainty of political transition, many foundations and non-profit actors are struggling to find new footing. On some days, both opportunity and setbacks seem to exist in equal measure.

Unleashing Local Resources

Governments in the Arab region have responded to pressure for reform and popular participation either by repression or by concession. Even in ‘successful’ uprisings such as those of Egypt and Tunisia, the ultimate outcomes of regime change are far from certain. Nonetheless, one feature of the region-wide uprisings gives ground for optimism: the flowering of peaceful citizen initiative, which had been suppressed throughout decades of dictatorship.

  Takaful 2011: The First Annual Conference on Arab Philanthropy and Civic Engagement

The research papers in this volume were selected from among nearly 30 presented at the Takaful Conference on Philanthropy and Civic Engagement in the Arab Region. It was the first in what is anticipated will be an annual gathering of scholars and practitioners in this emerging field. The conference was jointly organized by the John D. Gerhart Center for Philanthropy and Civic Engagement at American University in Cairo and the Columbia University Middle East Research Center (CUMERC) in Amman, under the patronage of HM Queen Rania al Abdullah of Jordan
