As my first year at The American University in Cairo draws to a close, I am more confident than ever in our community and the potential of our fine institution.
This year, we successfully confronted several challenges — but even greater opportunities remain for us to embrace as a community. In the face of difficult economic realities, we have strengthened our prudent fiscal management, and we have re-focused on our core mission of serving students. We continue as a community to work on re-imagining the student experience at AUC. Despite the sharp loss in value of the national currency this year, we achieved our objective of losing no current student due to an inability to pay tuition. More than 2,200 students received either new or additional emergency funding. In addition, we raised more than $10 million in private philanthropic contributions this year, the majority of it directed toward scholarship support. This support includes 100 new full scholarships, ensuring we are able to attract top performers from Egypt and around the world.
We are revitalizing our strategic plan through our 2020 centennial with participation of leading representatives of all our AUC community constituencies, including parents and students. This will further strengthen our preparation for our re-accreditation next year. We have brought aboard key new members of the administration’s leadership team, as well as new trustees and excellent new faculty members. Together, we will be taking initiatives to sustain the excellence of the AUC experience, including a focus on health, safety and security on campus, and on digital innovation. I hope you will enjoy the accompanying video showcasing our many accomplishments, from academics to research, athletics and community engagement, which have testified to AUC’s excellence this year.
As we close this academic year and set an ambitious agenda for the next, I extend a special thanks to our community — students, faculty, staff, alumni, donors, Parents Association and trustees — and all AUC’s friends and partners, for a successful year. I wish all a happy summer as we recharge to advance on all fronts this fall toward our celebration of our second century.
To our colleagues and friends who are observing Ramadan, Eid saeed and kol sana wa entum tay’been.
