I had hoped physically to join our community today in mourning together the tragic loss of one of our beloved students, Ahmed Abdel Aziz. I regret that the delay of my flight from Amman has precluded me from joining this afternoon’s prayers in person.
Like all of us in the AUC community, I was deeply shocked and saddened at yesterday’s tragic news. The loss of any loved one, at any age and under any circumstances, inflicts deep sorrow on the family and friends left behind. This is especially the case for the parents, family and friends of Ahmed, but also for the rest of our community of which Ahmed was such a vibrant and beloved member. I count myself blessed to have met Ahmed, as an enthusiastic force in the Robotics Club, whose achievements we joined in celebrating only a few months ago. Though I had the pleasure of knowing him only too briefly, he touched my own life as he did so many others with his warm smile, big heart and boundless dreams.
Since hearing the news of the accident on Monday, we have all struggled between hopeful prayer for Ahmed’s recovery, and since early yesterday, the impossibility of accepting the painful fact of his loss. We pray for the repose of his soul, and for the patience and comfort of Ahmed’s family and closest friends. At the same time, we seek urgently to comprehend in rigorous detail how such a tragic accident could have befallen us, despite the fact that lifeguards were on active duty at the pool during the incident.
EVP Brian MacDougall has been leading a comprehensive investigation since the first report of the accident. The pool is closed for the next two weeks, while we complete our review. AUC personnel informed the appropriate government authorities immediately on Monday, and we continue to collaborate closely with them.
And of course, we will do all humanly possible to ensure that such a combination of circumstances can never again endanger the lives or health of our community members.
May Allah grant Ahmed eternal rest and peace to his family, and all who knew and loved him.
