AUC's Academic Program

AUC's academic program is based on a liberal arts education, where students are encouraged to think critically, study across disciplines, and find creative solutions to enduring and urgent problems.

Core Curriculum

The Core Curriculum is the foundation of every student’s education at AUC — the heart of the liberal arts experience. It includes courses in writing, language and information literacy; philosophic and scientific thinking; Arab history, literature and society; and foundational classes in the natural sciences, social sciences and humanities.

The Core Curriculm prepares students to be well-rounded individuals, excelling not just in their chosen field of study, but ensuring that they are able to think for themselves, solve problems outside their field and quickly pick up new skills in today's ever-changing world.

Schools and Departments

The academic program of the American University in Cairo is offered by departments and institutes that are housed in four schools. The academic area also includes research centers and support services units.

Through its four schools, AUC offers over 30 undergraduate majors and 15 graduate programs serving approximately 5,000 students, as well as educational opportunities to enhance the professional and job skills of over 30,000 non-degree students. Guiding these exceptional students is a faculty of over 300 professional and dedicated scholars who hold advanced degrees from leading universities around the world.

Through its academic programs, the School of Business, Economics and Communication offers a unique multicultural perspective on global business. Its programs stimulate interactive and open dialogue among the school’s stakeholders: experienced faculty, motivated students, business partners and alumni. It is the only school of its kind in Egypt and North Africa and one of only 85 business schools outside the United States whose business, accounting and MBA programs are accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. The school offers students an opportunity to learn, work and live an international experience.

The School of Humanities and Social Sciences roots its academic and extracurricular programs in critical thinking and creative problem-solving. Its graduates seek careers that contribute to solving social and political problems and that enhance the cultural and intellectual life of Egypt, the region and the world. At AUC, students strengthen their ability to analyze opinions and assumptions, becoming more aware of the past while remaining open to new ways of thinking and new ways of addressing fundamental sociocultural concerns.

The School Of Sciences and Engineering offers foundational knowledge in the fields of science and engineering — a grounding in key experiments and proofs, theories and ways of knowing. Students are educated to acquire an appreciation of their responsibilities to society, and to prepare themselves for successful careers and leadership. The school provides an environment in which students develop their critical thinking capabilities, problem solving skills, communication skills and proficiency in the tools of learning.

The School of Continuing Education extends the resources of the university into the community by providing high quality educational opportunities for learners of all ages to enrich their lives, enhance their professional qualifications and promote their careers.

Libraries and Learning Technologies

The university's Libraries and Learning Technologies includes the Main Library, the Rare Books and Special Collections Library, Classroom Technologies and Media Services, Academic Computing Services, and the Center for Learning and Teaching. These constitute a vital component of the university as they provide access to resources, information and services for students, faculty and scholars from Egypt, the Middle East and worldwide — services designed to promote innovative, technologically advanced teaching and learning.
