AUC President Speaks at WISE Summit on Bridging Educational Inequalities
In a speech delivered at the World Innovations Summit for Education (WISE) in Doha, AUC President David D. Arnold urged attendees to “think global, act local” in working to address social inequality in Egypt, the region and the world. Citing AUC as an example, Arnold pointed to the Leadership for Education and Development (LEAD) program, funded by the U.S. and Egyptian governments, which provides scholarships for 54 public school students to attend AUC each year. “Within our limited sphere of influence and working with committed public and private sector partners, we can make a big difference for a select group of underprivileged students who would never have the educational and leadership opportunities that AUC offers,” Arnold said. AUC Students Awarded First Prize for Emotion Recognition Project
AUC engineering students received first prize at the eleventh International ACM SIGACCESS Conference on Computers and Accessibility for their project on assistive technologies for individuals on the autism spectrum. The paper presents the research project that the AUC students contributed to as part of the Affective Computing research group at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's (MIT) Media Laboratory, to create a wearable system designed to recognize a person's emotions through analyzing facial expressions in a video. A New Perspective on History
Mate Nikola Tokić, a new assistant professor of history, comes to AUC to pursue teaching and research in migration and transnational political violence. Although his current work focuses on Croatian separatist groups outside of Yugoslavia in the decades following World War II, he hopes to expand his research to similar themes in contemporary Middle Eastern history. In the process, he will instill in his students both a reverence for primary source documents and the independent thought necessary for them to draw their own conclusions about historical work. Global Businesswoman Joins AUC Faculty
Russia, China, Turkey, Canada, the United States, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and Egypt – these are just a few of the countries where Marina Apaydin, new assistant professor of management, has lived, worked or studied in the past two decades. After years of itinerancy, though, Apaydin has found a home at AUC and has joined on a mission to revolutionize the business school by focusing on integrated learning, the business case study method and relaying to her AUC students the myriad of lessons she has learned over the years in various businesses and enterprises. AUC Launches New Blog
Extending its reach to online communities, the university has launched a blog, AUC Now, which is designed to engage readers in the academic, cultural and community service activities at AUC. The university can now be found on YouTube, Facebook, Flickr, Twitter and LinkedIn. Lectures and events held at the university can also be heard via podcasts on iTunes. More »
AUC LEAD Student Receives Moataz Al Alfi Award
AUC student Hagar Ibrahim, computer science junior in the Leadership for Education and Development program, received the Moataz Al Alfi Award for Excellence in Civic Engagement and Philanthropy. Ibrahim’s project is to develop a software engineering company, where she will employ 20 students from local public high schools as interns to provide them with training in the computer programming.
