Cheer on the AUC Frisbee Team at First Regional Championship this Weekend

Show your eagle pride this weekend by cheering on the AUC Club Frisbee Team at the first annual MENA Frisbee Club Championship. Scroll through the slideshow above for a preview of the event.

Hosted by the Office of Athletics at AUC, this is the first major annual tournament for club Ultimate Frisbee to be held in the region. The AUC Ultimate Frisbee team will compete against six mixed-gender teams from Egypt, Lebanon and Jordan for the championship title.

“The MENA Club Championships will be important in promoting Ultimate Frisbee in the region. It will also be a very good opportunity to get to know other teams in MENA, so each team can learn from the other,” said Karim Rafik, tournament director and also member of AUC team “Mayhem.” "Hosting the tournament at AUC is very exciting since it will be the first international Ultimate event in Egypt. The tournament will attract the attention of a large number of Egyptians through social media, and we hope to have many people come to watch the games. Hopefully the international teams will also enjoy playing for these two days and visiting Egypt. I hope that in the coming years more teams join the tournament to make it even more competitive and attractive to the public.”

Johanna Von Toggenburg, captain of the Lebanon team, agreed, noting that the tournament will “contribute to creating a better understanding of young people from different countries in the region, which is important to paving the way for a peaceful and open-minded future in MENA. Ultimate has huge potential to build friendship, trust and respect. A solidarity exists all over the world amongst Ultimate players, no matter their background, nationality or religion. These are perfect conditions for the sport to act as common ground in areas of conflicts or to involve the most vulnerable. In the region, Ultimate has already created a generation of young and respectful leaders.”

The competition will take place on Friday, November 20 and Saturday, November 21 from 9 AM to 5 PM on the University's Khalaf Ahmad Al Habtoor Football and Track Stadium at the New Cairo campus. The championship game will start at 3 PM on Saturday with an awards ceremony at 4:45 PM that same night.
