Residing Off Campus: a challenging experience

Kindly note that living independently in Cairo can be full of daily challenges and entails exposure to cultural differences which can cause problems if you are not acquainted with Egyptian culture.

Therefore when choosing to live off campus always keep in mind:

1) It requires a certain level of maturity, minimal Arabic language skills, and traveling experiences outside western countries.
2) AUC campus and the dorms enjoy a high level of security that is not necessarily available off-campus.
3) Make your decision carefully and wisely.

Deciding to live off campus means that you are sacrificing:

1) AUC security guarding your home.
2) Restrictions with opposite sex visitors.
3) AUC security bag-checks at entrance (for drugs & alcohol).

Making the right decision:

How to know whether to live on campus or independently?
To answer this question you must follow the following criteria
Ask yourself:

    1)  Have I traveled outside the Western World before (Canada and Western Europe do not count)?
    2) Am I adaptable with different peoples/ lifestyles/ appearances?
    3) Do I have friends who are racially different from myself?
    4) Do I possess minimal Arabic language skills?
    5) Do I practice my street smarts?  (What works in the west works here too).
    6) Am I efficient and comfortable resolving conflicts and problem solving independently.

Some students find that renting a furnished apartment in Cairo is more cost effective for their budget and allows a more independent lifestyle. If you choose to not live in university housing, then you have the challenge of finding a flat in Cairo, dealing with the landlord and negotiating a fair rental agreement.
The International Student Affairs office (ISA) has put together an Off Campus Housing Assistance to make your adjustment to Cairo's life as smooth as possible. It provides you with descriptive information about Cairo neighborhoods, list of apartments that were previously rented or have been recommended by AUC students and from billboard postings. In case your search is unfortunate, you can contact isa@aucegypt.edu  for further assistance.
