AUC offers faculty housing in the popular Cairo neighborhood of Maadi, and in New Cairo located minutes from the AUC New Cairo campus.
New Cairo is an up-and-coming neighborhood located 35 km from downtown Cairo. Many are attracted to the fresh air and quiet neighborhoods in New Cairo. New Cairo faculty housing is a popular choice for families because of the close proximity and convenience of the on-campus nursery and new international schools being built nearby.
The University has built two new apartment buildings (plot 1 and plot 3) with large, furnished apartments, each featuring a balcony or outdoor area, common areas with tables and grills, an underground garage, and 24 hour security. Many new faculty live in New Cairo housing and have built a friendly, international living community. The building is located only 500 meters from the campus and there is a shuttle that runs to and from campus many times a day. Faculty living in New Cairo housing can also use the regular AUC buses that leave the campus throughout the day during weekdays to go to many neighborhoods around Cairo.
Take a look around with a virtual tour. For a description of the plot 1 apartments and floor plans, click here. For plot 3 apartments and floor plans, click here. For a description of the building and its facilities and to view pictures of a model apartment, click here.

New Cairo Green Building Initiatives
As part of an ongoing commitment to increasing energy efficiency, reducing waste and making AUC a sustainable community, the University has embedded innovative green concepts into the design and structure of the plot 3 faculty housing building. One of the main features is the green roof, the first of its kind in Egypt. The green roof not only provides faculty members with the opportunity to garden, but also makes the building energy efficient by providing an additional layer of insulation from thermal radiation, keeping the building cooler during summer months. To make use of Egypt’s abundant solar resources, the building has solar water heaters to minimize the use of electricity in heating the water, as well as solar panels on the roof to drive the system.
Why live in a green building?
- Have a breath of fresh air inside -- The building features high indoor air quality through good ventilation and the usage of non-chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) refrigerant air conditioners, which cuts cooling costs and eliminates CFC chemicals that destroy the ozone layer.
- Rationalize water consumption with the installation of filters on water mixers. Save energy by using a solar water heater and energy-saving bulbs. You will see a drastic reduction in your operation costs.
- The interior walls are painted with low volatile organic compounds (VOC) rather than conventional paint made from petrochemical-based solvents, off-gas toxic indoor air pollutants that diminish air quality and may be a health hazard. Fumes can cause eye and throat irritation, as well as headaches, nausea and dizziness. Some people with asthma find that paint fumes can trigger attacks.
- The green roof captures airborne pollutants and atmospheric deposition, filters noxious gases, reduces the amount of energy needed to moderate the temperature of the building and reduces electromagnetic radiation.
- Recycling garbage containers reduce the cost of recycling and eventual disposal, in addition to preventing contamination and dangerous substances mixing.
Maadi is a neighborhood along the Nile located ten kilometers (six miles) south of downtown Cairo and 20 km (12 miles) southwest of AUC New Cairo. A metro stop is located nearby which is a quick and easy way to get downtown. There is an AUC bus service to the New Cairo campus that takes around 50 minutes depending on the time of the day.
Maadi is a mostly an upper-middle class, cosmopolitan and Westernized suburb with a mix of Egyptians and expats. Once a neighborhood of large old homes and gardens, it is rapidly being built up with apartment buildings. The beautiful residential areas are surrounded by shady trees and gardens, where something seems to be in bloom in every season. The streets are pleasant for walking and there are an abundance of grocery stores, shopping facilities, restaurants and fast food outlets, and several indoor and outdoor cafes.
Many people with school-aged children who enjoy city life find Maadi the best place to live. The neighborhood offers family-oriented activities and many of the best private international schools in Cairo are located there including Cairo American College, the French Lycée and the Maadi British International School. There are also several nurseries for small children.
