Art & Architecture of Spain - Part II (ARTV-370-01)

Course Description: The course starts with an overview of its content, the art and architecture of the Islamic period are emphasized with visual presentations of the cities of Seville, Cordoba and Granada. Students later travel to Barcelona to visit several museums to learn first hand about Picasso, Dali, and other Spanish artists.  Contemporary art is examined with visits to art museums.  The works of the great architect Gaudí is studied with visits to his museum and several of his buildings like: la Sagrada Familia, la Casa Batllo, and la Pedrera among others. In cooperation with the International University of Catalonia library access and study space will be provided. 

Investigative field sketching using a variety of media is part of the visits and is evaluated with frequent critiques.  Students will be graded on their work, their openness to ideas, and course participation. The final grade is based on five projects inspired by the artists and buildings visited, a short paper reflecting the student's understanding of the art and architecture of Spain, and their trip sketchbook.

The course is open to students with an art experience equivalent to basic design and drawing (ARTV-200 and ARTV-201). Approval of instructor is required for registration. Contact +2 010 181 4551 for additional information.
