New Program Evaluation

Criteria:
I. Proposals for new academic programs will be evaluated using the following criteria:

• In line with AUC's Mission Statement, the new program should be relevant to society. It should "contribute to Egypt's cultural and intellectual life" and ""foster students' appreciation of their own culture and heritage and of their responsibilities to society."

• In line with AUC's Mission Statement, the new program should be relevant to AUC, It should have "high quality educational opportunities for students" and ensure that it "advances the ideals of American liberal arts and professional education," Furthermore, it should exploit any additional comparative advantages of AUC,

• The new program should be relevant to world trends and career opportunities.

• The new program should preferably include innovative elements not available at other institutions in Egypt.

• The new program should be in an area of demand (preferably increasing students, but not as a condition).

• The new program should preferably be self-financing at maturity. Availability of budget for faculty. Adequacy of instruction equipment, library resources in consultation with the Library, and space must all be considered under this heading.

Procedures:
II. Proposals for new academic programs will be subject to the following steps:
1. The chair of the department proposing a new program should meet with the Dean of the School and the Provost to discuss the proposal.
2. The department proposing to offer a new program should meet with OPIR to discuss how to obtain information to assess space, library, and computing resources, student demand, potential enrollment and any special needs. e.g. laboratories. The department should work in conjunction and in consultation with OPIR. They will assist the department in contacting the following parts of the university:

OPIR will assist the department in preparing the following additional data for the evaluation of programs:
• Tuition revenues, if any, from additional students
• Funding opportunities for support of the program
• Estimated overall cost for the program
• Budget for phases of implementation
• Costs for new faculty / staff
• Laboratory facilities and equipment
• Space needs (administrative as well as instructional)
• Ratio of FTE students to FTE faculty
• Computing resources
• Library resources
• Other

3. Once the department, in consultation with OPIR, deems the proposal to be feasible, the academic aspects of the program should be evaluated at both the department and the school levels.

4. Proposals found to be both academically meritorious and feasible, in accordance with steps 1 and 2 above, should be presented to the University Senate for consideration.

5. The recommendation of the Senate will be sent to the president. If approved by the president, the program proposal will be sent to the Board of Trustees, the Egyptian Supreme Council of Universities and the Middle States Association, as required.
