- Formative Assessment through Online Quizzes
Tuesday, Oct 19, 11:10-11:55 am
Academics face a dilemma in the assessment of students. "Summative assessment" has more to do with credentialing students than "learning". "Formative assessment", on the other hand has more to do with "learning" than credentialing.
However, summative assessment is quickly accomplished, easy to deliver, provides answers and results, and makes it appear as if we are doing our job (assuming part of our job is helping students to learn). Formative assessment is normally very difficult to accomplish, time-consuming to deliver, provides more questions than answers, but actually does help us to do our job. Most of us engage only, or mainly, in summative assessment for a variety of reasons. So students get credentialed upon graduation, but learn much less than they could.
WebCT and the use of "online quizzes" can assist in overcoming this dilemma. I think!

- Facilitating Active Learning with Technology
Tuesday, November 9, 11:10-11:55 am
Using Learning Management Systems (LMS), such as WebCT, poses important pedagogic issues for instructors; the use of LMS can in fact compound the mistakes of the past and leave the learner with a passive experience leading to surface learning. This workshop will emphasize that learning is a social process and that providing an effective learning environment, which facilitates the active acquisition of subject-specific knowledge requires more than electronically delivered course notes and email discussion. The workshop will engage participants in exploring what is required in order to achieve “active learning”.

- E-moderating: the key to learning online
Wednesday, November 24, 3:00-4:15 pm
“Successful online learning depends primarily on teachers and trainers acquiring new competences and becoming familiar with the potential of learning platforms to inspire and motivate learners, BUT not mastering the technology itself.” (G.Salmon)
The workshop will explore these and similar issues in an interactive approach in order to identify the mechanism by which “teachers” become “facilitators and/or moderators of knowledge construction.

- Inquiry-Based Learning Using Webquests
Tuesday, November 30, 12:00-1:00 pm
"Tell me and I forget, show me and I remember, involve me and I understand." This workshop will explore the benefits and possible applications of inquiry-based learning through the use of Webquests, which use the Internet as the source of information for student exploration. Participants will create their own subject-specific Webquests for students.
Facilitators: Ms Angela McCallum and Ms. Natasha Gast (Writing Program)

- Untangling Web/Internet Citation
Wednesday, December 22, 3:00-4:15 pm
Just as any other source you use, the Internet needs to be properly cited. That alphabet soup of styles (MLA, APA, CBE, ACS, etc.) is still applicable and just as full of rules for the Web/Internet. This workshop will explore the issue of Web/Internet citation and provide general guidelines
