Services Provided by STAs

Following are some of the services that can be provided by Student Technology Assistants

Training and Developing courses on WebCT

Faculty members are assigned an STA for a one-on-one training on WebCT "at their own pace and on their own schedules". They are trained on various features of WebCT, and if they so wish, are helped in developing 1, 2 or 3 courses/semester (uploading course materials, posting grades...). Faculty members can retain the services of the STAs for a second semester, if they so wish, to complete the development of their courses.

Converting and Manipulating Images

Convert pictures from paper or 35mm film to computer images using flatbed and slide scanners. Enhance and manipulate computer images, e.g., adding text or other graphics to clarify, emphasize, etc.

Editing Text Documents

Convert printed materials to computer readable text by scanning with Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software. Create Adobe PDF files (Portable Document Format) that can be read on any computer using free Adobe Acrobat software.

Preparing PowerPoint (PPT) Presentations

Create Microsoft PowerPoint slide presentation shows. Link other computer applications within a presentation, e.g., jump from a PowerPoint slide to an Excel Spreadsheet (or a URL, another PPT show or a video clip) and back again. Create animation schemes using the PPT tool.

Editing Videos

STA helped the Arabic Language Institute (ALI) digitize instructional videos using Adobe Premier.
