The Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism at the University of Oxford is looking for suitable candidates for the new Mona Megalli Fellowship to be offered within the Reuters Foundation Fellowship Programme at Oxford. The Fellowship is tenable for two academic terms (ie. six months) during the 2008-2009 academic year.

The Fellowship is open to a practicing mid-career journalist from the Middle East interested in researching and publishing material about professional standards and journalistic ethics in the region, how these impact on the practice of journalism there, and what changes are needed or could be contemplated to improve the practice of journalism in the region.

The Fellowship is in memory of Mona Megalli, a distinguished Egyptian-American Reuters journalist who died in 2007 after a long illness. Having worked for large parts of her career as a journalist in the Middle East, Mona made a bequest to fund activities and initiatives designed to enhance the professional ethics of journalism in the region. This new Fellowship is one of those initiatives.

To be considered, applicants are asked to submit a proposal which gives details of the proposed research topic and the planned output. The deadline for applications is March 30, 2008. There is a minimum requirement of five years' professional journalistic experience. In order to take full advantage of the excellent facilities of the Institute and of Oxford University, a good working knowledge of spoken and written English is required. Costs of the Fellowship, including travel costs, will be borne by the Reuters Institute, and Fellows also receive a small stipend to cover housing and living expenses.

YOUNG JOURNALISTS/FILMMAKERS WANTED FOR METROPOLIS TV

Hivos, the Dutch humanist funding agency, and Netherlands-based NPRO Television are looking for talented young journalists and filmmakers to help create a global network of correspondents for a new multimedia project, Metropolis TV.

Metropolis TV will broadcast weekly TV shows and a video website about small and big world affairs. From New York to Kinshasa and from Tokyo to Calcutta, correspondents will give unique insights into their lives, their countries, their news and their lifestyles.

Filmmakers and journalists will contribute one to four short stories a month about events in their country. They should have proven research, filming and editing skills, lots of ideas and local contacts, and access to equipment in their home countries.

The stories will be featured on the web in Dutch and English, and a selection will be shown in a weekly broadcast on national Dutch TV
