  1. Do all graduate applicants need to take an English test?

  1. Do all graduate applicants need to take an English test?
    Applicants must demonstrate knowledge of English adequate for graduate study in that language. For full admission to the university, a graduate applicant must attain the required score on either the AUC English Language Proficiency Entrance Test (ELPET) or the TOEFL (with TWE) examination. Furthermore, applicants to the graduate programs in teaching English as a foreign language (TEFL) and English and comparative literature (ECLT) need to demonstrate a higher level of English proficiency. Graduate applicants who hold degrees from an accredited English medium university or applicants who are enrolled in an accredited English medium university are exempted from this requirement unless they are applying for the African Graduate Fellowship and would like to enroll in TEFL or ECLT.

  2. If my TOEFL/ELPET scores do not admit me directly, will I take the assigned English Module together with the major study?
    The answer to this question depends on the placement within the English Language Institute (ELI), which is based on the English level of the student. If you obtain scores that places you in an intensive English program (ELIN 120 or 121), then you will not be permitted to take any additional courses. If you placement requires you to take an English module: Writing (ENGL 123), Reading (ENGL 124) or Listening and Speaking (ENGL 125), then you may take other courses according to the formula below:
    All three modules: you may take one undergraduate course
    Two modules: you may take one undergraduate course or one graduate course
    One module: two undergraduate courses or one graduate and one undergraduate course
    Each module meets for two hours once or twice a week and requires at least three hours out-of-class preparation per week for each weekly class meeting (e.g., a student enrolled in three modules should expect to spend at least 9 hours per week outside class plus eight hours per week in class).

  3. I have to take one or two English language modules in the ELI, what graduate courses can I take at the same time?
    If you are taking two modules: you may take one undergraduate course or one graduate course. If you are taking just one module: two undergraduate courses or one graduate and one undergraduate course

  4. I am taking an English language module and a graduate course; can I drop the language and keep the graduate course?
    No. A student who withdraws from the English module must also withdraw from any non-English language courses.

  5. If an AUC graduate wants to apply for the MA in TEFL or ECLT, does he/she have to sit for the ELPET or TOEFL?
    The answer is yes except for those with a BA in ECLT or Philosophy from AUC. These two graduate programs TEFL and ECLT require a higher level of English proficiency. Applicants need to obtain the following scores:

  6. If I am an AUC graduate with a BA in ECLT or Philosophy, do I still have to sit for the TOEFL/ELPET if I am applying for the graduate program in ECLT or TEFL?
    No. You do not have to take the TOEFL / ELPET tests.
