  1. What are the sources of information available to graduate students?
    These include the following:
    - The graduate Handbook, which is given to all graduate students when they first join AUC.
    - The AUC daily bulletin
    - The OGSR website
    - Schedule of Classes issued by the Office of the Registrar
    - The Web for Students
    - The Graduate Studies Notice Boards at the entrances to the main and the - Greek Campuses
    - GRADs e-mail list
    - The Graduate Student Association (GSA)
    - The “Caravan” and “Channel”
    - The International Handbook

  2. How many times a week do I have to attend for one course, and are the classes given in the morning or the evening?
    The majority of graduate courses are usually offered once a week in the afternoon and evening. Prerequisite undergraduate courses may be offered on Mondays and Wednesdays; or Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. Please note that undergraduate classes may be scheduled at an earlier time.

  3. Is there distance learning in the graduate program at AUC?
    Not at this time.

  4. I have a daytime job and I can only come to AUC in the late afternoon, how can I get advice and register for my courses? Can this be done by telephone or the Internet?
    You should be able to call your specific department during working hours (8:30am – 3:30pm). A list of contact information for all departments is provided at the beginning of each semester to new students. You can also e-mail your department to arrange a meeting with your faculty adviser in the afternoon. The Graduate Handbook, which is distributed during orientation for new graduate students, lists the graduate advisers and their contact information for all academic programs.

  5. As a new graduate student, who is my faculty adviser? How do I decide on a faculty adviser for my thesis?
    Upon entering the department of major, the student will be assigned an academic adviser who will provide counsel concerning degree requirements, course offerings, preparation for the comprehensive examination, and selection of a thesis topic and adviser. When a thesis topic and adviser are selected and approved, the thesis adviser then also becomes the academic adviser.
    In the case of the thesis adviser, most students find it possible to work with a faculty member whose area of interest covers the topic of the proposed thesis. The thesis committee is usually determined according to departmental policies.

  6. What are the responsibilities of the faculty graduate adviser and what are the responsibilities of the departmental administrative assistant?
    The faculty graduate advisor provides counsel concerning degree requirements, course offerings, preparation for the comprehensive examination, and selection of a thesis topic and adviser. When a thesis topic and adviser are selected and approved, the thesis adviser then also becomes the academic adviser. The departmental administrative assistant should be able to help students log on to the Student Information System (SIS), place the permission to enroll in courses on (SIS) if needed, help students get their PIN, register on the Web for Students, etc.

  7. Where do I find a computer lab that I can use for registering my courses and for my work?
    To access the Web on campus, visit any of these AUC computer labs:

  8. What are the facilities given by the library to graduate students?
    Please refer to the library website for a comprehensive description of resources, facilities, and services offered to graduate students.

  9. I am a senior undergraduate student, can I take graduate courses for graduate credit before I obtain my BA/BS?
    Yes, you can. According to the University Catalog: “a senior student who has a B average may take two graduate courses, not exceeding six credits, either for graduate credit or for completion of requirements for the bachelor’s degree.”

  10. As an international graduate student, where am I going to stay?
    There are a number of housing options for international graduate students upon arrival in Cairo. The first is AUC’s University Residence. The university residence’s main advantages are its conveniences: it’s clean, there are shuttles to and from campus, there are interesting people to meet from around the world, etc. Most graduate students, however, find that the university residence is too isolated from the rest of Egyptian society, miss being able to cook their own meals and are distracted by the constant noise problems. That said, the university residence is often a good choice for your first semester. It allows you to acclimate yourself and focus on other priorities for the first few months you are here.
