Holger Albrecht
Assistant Professor
Holger Albrecht received his M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Tübingen, where he also taught courses since 2004. Prior to joining AUC, he held a Post-Doctoral Research Position at the Center for the Study of Democracy of the University of
Lüneburg.
Holger’s main focus is on the relationship between authoritarian regimes and societies in the Middle East and North Africa. He has published numerous articles on authoritarianism and regime change, state-society relations, political opposition, and Islamist movements in peer reviewed academic journals and edited volumes. His Ph.D. thesis on political opposition under authoritarianism in Egypt (forthcoming 2009) received the Dissertation Award 2008 of the German Middle East Studies Association. Holger has edited two books on politics and Islamist movements in the Middle East and North Africa and is a co-editor of the book series “Weltregionen im Wandel” (Nomos Press). He is also the co-editor, with Maye Kassem, of another volume on Contentious Politics in the Middle East (forthcoming 2009).
