Professor of Physics
Director Science and Technology Research Center
School of Sciences and Engineering Directly after obtaining his Ph.D. from the University of Keel, United Kingdom, Fadel Assabghy joined the physics unit at AUC in 1970. He was instrumental in developing the electronics option as an applied program within the physics curriculum. The Electronics Option and the laboratory that complements and reinforces the lecture courses have been and continue to be, the main focus of Assabghy's teaching career.
Assabghy’s research interests and publications are in the fields of electronic properties and Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) studies of glasses and carbon fibers. Actively involved in the inception of the AUC Desert Development Center (DDC) through his direction of the Solar Energy activities of the DDC. He was also the principle investigator for a research project in hydroponics agriculture, called the Nutrient Film Technique or NFT.
Assabghy’s served as chair of the AUC Senate from 1996 – 1998 and was an active member of the Murray Committee, which dealt with issues related to faculty retirement. In 1998, He was awarded the Parents’ Association Outstanding Teaching Award.
Prior to his appointment as Dean of the School of Sciences and Engineering in 1999, he had formerly been acting dean of the school. He had also previously been head of the physics unit and of the science department and director of the Core Curriculum Program. During his tenure the School underwent major restructuring, and Assabghy was instrumental in introducing new majors in Electronic Engineering and Actuarial Science. Assabghy stepped down from his position as Dean in 2005 to become Director of the Science and Technology Research Center (STRC) whose initial phases of development he had administered for the previous two years.
