Students' Comments
"Although my first language at school was French, my teachers in the IEP enabled me, in one semester, to go straight from English 99 to 112 (currently ECLT 101/102). This strong base of a good command of English helped me all through my academic life. It helped me to pass the mass communication placement exam and declare as a mass com student with a specialization in journalism and a minor in political science, to join the Caravan for three semesters as a reporter and later as an editor, and finally to graduate with honors in three and a half years. Without a semester in the IEP, I would not have been able to achieve any of these things so smoothly."

"As a French school student, I found it really helpful to begin my first semester in the IEP and that is because I learned the basics of grammar, how to write a good essay, how to read and analyze correctly, and a lot of new vocabulary."

"IEP introduced us to the meaning of liberal education. We experience the value of it years after. It also helped secure my linguistic foundation. I am doing well and I thank God for it all."

"What did I get from the IEP? I guess the most important thing is that I learned how to study in a different way. I had graduated from a government high school which teaches students how to memorize facts without thinking and analyzing. It was totally different at AUC, and the IEP was the first step for me in this new society! I loved to think when studying, and to understand why and how things are the way they are."

"At first, I thought that the IEP was boring, but after leaving it I discovered that I had learned many things my English 112 (currently ECLT 101/102) classmates do NOT know, but should know. Everything I learned in the IEP was very, very useful. There is a big difference between those students who have gone through the IEP and those who entered directly. I really loved my teachers and the class atmosphere. The IEP teachers were so helpful."

"From an Arabic language education to the Computer Science program at AUC, the IEP was a milestone in my academic journey. I got my Bachelor's degree, succeeded in publishing a paper at an international conference, and received a Graduate Merit Fellowship Award. Now, I am assisting undergraduate students and progressing in my graduate studies. In addition, I am involved in many social and professional activities. Throughout the journey, success was not possible without the solid linguistic base founded in the IEP."

"I think what you should focus on in the IEP is participation in class because it's important for students to know how to exchange opinions and ideas ... especially since participation is important after that in all our classes. Life is fun — enjoy it, but do your work as well."

"I thought it was a disaster when I heard that I would be a student in English 98, but I learned a lot of useful information and I gained a lot of knowledge and experience in the IEP. The IEP gave me the chance to improve my English. In the IEP, I found mothers and sisters, not teachers, because they advised and treated me in a friendly way, so I want to thank my teachers because they are great teachers and they like their job."

"I learned a lot in the IEP coming from an Arabic school; this was a total change from my previous education. It was the only way to get a good start. Later I got an "A" in the Seminar and passed English 113 (currently ECLT 103) with distinction."

"The IEP contributed greatly to my academic success at AUC. It helped me to adapt gradually to university life. The IEP enriched my language capabilities, both written and spoken, and it qualified me to study as an undergraduate student at AUC. The IEP is never a waste of time. It is a true guide to a successful academic life; trust my words. This picture shows myself on the left and my friend Mona El Shazly, who is also a former IEP student. She is currently a famous anchor at the ART TV station."

"What I learned from the IEP and what still helps me till now is my writing ability; plus, the IEP made me like reading in English. What I miss about the IEP is its friendly atmosphere, which means that one can never find others like the people one gets to know in the IEP. Even now they are my best friends at AUC."
